Watchmen

Watchmen was amazing. They did it right. Yeah, there were a couple of small missteps, but every movie has those. By and large, though, it worked. It looked right, the characters were well cast (oh, man, Rorschach was spot-on, especially as Walter Kovacs) and the story was faithful to the graphic novel without being too much so. Even the ending worked. I would have preferred the original ending, but this one was okay.

One thing that amuses me is how much people are focusing on Dr. Manhattan's big blue schlong. Get over it, people. How many movies feature multiple sequences of gratuitous female nudity (OMG! Put more boobs in so the guys will watch it!) This one wasn't gratuitous. That's the way it was in the book. I never understood why female nudity (even full frontal) is almost expected, but male nudity is *gasp* shocking!

But anyway, that's beside the point. Watchmen was brilliant. If you're a geek, you must see it. Preferably after you've read the graphic novel. But then again, if you haven't read the graphic novel by now, your geek card is suspect anyway. :)

IMO, this one beat the tights off the latest Batman. They were both about the same length, but while Batman dragged, this one just hummed along. I didn't look at my watch once. The only other superhero movie that I think even came close to it (and honestly, it's a tough call) was Iron Man. I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but aside from Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker, I didn't really think Batman was all that good.

Very much looking forward to the director's cut and Tales of the Black Freighter.
