Finally, it's time for them to go home. Patti and Galina get a cab, and Johnny and Tara wait for the next one, and then clamber in together. Johnny buckles his seatbelt, but Tara leans over and rests her head on his shoulder and pulls her legs up, curling up on the seat. It still feels like magic, the idea that all of these people want to see him again, want to talk to him and love him. He puts a hand in Tara's hair and pets.
"I'm so happy," she sighs, melting against him a little. He tries not to wince.
And he should probably answer, but Tara doesn't seem to notice, just cuddles up against him and beams.
When they get to the hotel, Patti and Galina are waiting for them in the lobby, and of course they have to give Johnny more hugs. Great. He wants to slip away up to his room and shut himself up for a while, but of course no one else wants that. It makes sense, if he had actually won a gold medal at Worlds he would want to be around people, especially these people. It's sort of okay anyway, because Patti puts a hand on his shoulder and Galina claps him on the back and it feels so nice to be Johnny Weir again that he genuinely smiles a little, despite everything.
"Johnny, why don't you come up to my room," Patti says, "and we can talk about where we're going to dinner."
Johnny does want to be alone, but he also can't even count the number of times in the past few days he's wished he could talk to Patti for even a second, so he nods. They go up in the elevator, Patti giving him sideways smiles and Johnny trying to return them, knowing with a cold certainty that she of all people is not going to let him get away with faking happiness for long. And suddenly, he doesn't even want to fake it. The curse thing was-is-fucked up, yeah, and he kept it a secret, but he can't lie about how he's feeling to his mom. Nothing could make him do that.
He sits down on Patti's bed, cross-legged, while she goes through her suitcase, looking for clothes to change into.
"I was thinking we could all go out somewhere nice and have a celebration," she says, pulling aside her clothes. "Remember that nice place we found the last time we were in Tokyo? It had those amazing chocolate desserts? You deserve a chocolate dessert."
Johnny thinks he definitely does, although maybe not for the reasons she thinks. He sighs and starts idly massaging his wrists. "I don't remember what it was called," he says. "Ask Galina, she remembers everything."
"This is true," Patti says. "Sometimes I tell her things just so I don't have to write them down."
Johnny tries to laugh, but it comes out in a puff of breath that sounds a little desperate at the edges. Patti turns, a jacket in her hand. "You okay, sweetie?"
Johnny half shrugs, and she's there in a second, sitting down beside him and putting an arm around his shoulder, jacket dropped and forgotten on the floor. He leans on her gratefully, and she lets him rest there for a second before asking, "What is it?"

"Johnny," Patti says, her voice low and concerned. Johnny reminds himself that he theoretically just won Worlds gold. You're not supposed to win Worlds gold and then go cry to your mom about it, but thinking that doesn't really help. He takes a deep breath.
"I just," he says, and stops. He tries helplessly to find the right way to say "Evan beat me while in my body and now I feel even worse than if he'd just beat me outright", but for some reason it's escaping him.
"I don't know if I can go to a celebration dinner," he says finally.
Patti squeezes his shoulder. "Honey, if I'd known the dinner would upset you so much I would definitely have suggested room service."
Johnny actually laughs then, and then something sticks in his chest and his mouth twists and he pulls away from Patti's shoulder and puts his face in his hands. Patti puts her hand on his back, palm open, and rubs a little between his shoulderblades.
"You don't have to tell me," she says.
"Thank you," Johnny says. "I can't-I can't explain and please don't ask me to, but I... uh." He breathes in again, tries to relax the tension in his shoulders. "I really don't deserve that medal."
Patti doesn't say anything, just keeps gently rubbing his back, like she did when he got sick as a kid. Johnny wonders what she must think is going on, and then he thinks, she's been seeing him withdraw from her for a few days and now he's talking about not deserving his medal and she probably thinks he's doping or something. Which is awful, but as long as she understands that he's not going to celebrate with her then it's okay. And he's pretty sure she still loves him anyway.
"Don't worry about it," Patti says finally. Tanya Lysacek flashes into his mind and he thinks, I have the best mom in the whole world.

Patti is so awesome! Johnny ;_____; I like how you've continued the story beyond their swapping back, because that's where a lot of stories tend to end, when really it makes sense for there still to be issues that need to be fixed. Long plotty fic! \\o//
Thank you, anonauthor, for writing this. <333

If I had posted this comment right after reading it would have been in like 45 pixel font, that's how mad I was. It's good I took some time, I think.
AGHHHH SO FRUSTRATED, POOR JOHNNY!!!!!
The hate!angry!sex was UNNNFFF SO HOT, but a lot of me wanted Johnny just to hit Evan in the face really hard, despite them having to leave the bathroom in a conspicuous manner in a few minutes, and also I really really wanted Johnny to just tell his mom because OMG HOW AWFUL.
Don't worry though, author!anon, NONE of that anger is directed at you. I read this story all in one sitting and it's AMAZING and GENIUS and REALLY, REALLY, REALLY WELL WRITTEN (hence why I have such strong feelings surrounding it) and I love you.
