Johnny stares out the window, feeling the bus lurch into park. A lunch with Evan, talking---it sounds awful and painful and like something icy cold has suddenly seized Johnny’s chest, but then-they’ve just spent the night in the same room, after all, and Evan didn’t make the situation worse. It was actually kind of like before Evan dropped The Bomb, when they were calling and texting and making fun of Jeremy’s jump faces. It wasn’t…all bad.
“Yeah, okay,” Johnny says, climbing down the stairs. Evan nods. His eyes look hopeful.
Stéphane waltzes off the bus behind them, effervescently cheerful as he always is in the morning (and God, when they trained together, Johnny had wanted to kill him during early-morning practice). But today, in addition to the scarf perfectly coiled around his neck, there’s something extra in his smile, his hands flying all over the place as he chats excitedly with Brian.
Once they’re in the locker room, with Evan disappeared off to wherever it is that the shunned American tour-crashers sit, Stéphane pulls Johnny over and whips out his phone.
He’s got a skating news website pulled up, and Johnny only has a second to vaguely recognize the logo before Stéphane is scrolling down.
Smuckers’ Stars on Ice announces withdrawal of Olympic Champion Evan Lysacek from remainder of 2011 Tour
NEW YORK-On Wednesday, Stars on Ice spokesperson Valerie Seidall announced that Evan Lysacek, 2010 Olympic Gold Medalist, has withdrawn from the remainder of the Stars on Ice tour. Lysacek initially announced a break from the tour last week, failing to appear in shows in Minnesota and Michigan, but was expected to resume touring tomorrow in Indianapolis. Reasons for the withdrawal are unknown.
“Okay,” Johnny says, reading it slowly. Evan’s not in the tour anymore-big deal. “Why are you showing me this?”
“This morning, I see this, I spoke to Shizuka, who spoke to Shae-Lynn, who spoke to the one with the big eyes-”
“Meryl,” Johnny supplies, waiting for the punchline.
“Yes,” Stéphane agrees, “And Meryl says to Shae-Lynn, it is not just withdrawing. Michael Weiss told her this morning Evan was given choice to make, come back right away or be fired. And, well, Evan is homophobic and an idiot and very, very wrong to call me and I am very offensé, for me and for you,” Stéphane waves a hand around and frowns momentarily before chasing it down with an endearingly dopey expression. “But he chose you.”
So that’s what he was texting this morning, Johnny thinks, and …Okay.
Stéphane, watching Johnny in silence, eventually puts his phone away and puts his hands on his hips. Johnny realizes dimly that Stéphane expects Johnny to find it…romantic. Johnny's mouth is dry.
Then, thank God, Evgeni is clearing his throat and stretching his muscles pointedly and they all go out on the ice before Johnny has time to construct a reply.
There’s so much-too much-rushing through Johnny’s head right now. That moment in the locker room at Worlds. Evan’s strange friendship, insulting confession and subsequent surprise arrival in Russia, with the bonus new addition of a grand romantic gesture.
Trying to learn to skate again and being terrified in front of a shell-shocked audience every night. The fact that Johnny hasn’t talked to Viktor in weeks or been home to Delaware since the change. The reactions of Johnny’s friends, other skaters and the world. Johnny’s new body and the very idea of sex.
The complete and utter shift in Johnny’s-god, Johnny hates to use the word, but Johnny’s narrative with Evan, to the point where Johnny almost felt bad about mocking his robotic, “highly successful” being this morning. Everything.
It’s too much, so Johnny ignores it all and does what’s been coming more and more naturally. Johnny pushes it down, listens to Edvin warming up the Strad, and starts to skate.

Chan mocking Evan to his face with the book is hilarious! (But poor Evan...)
And love for Johnny's reaction to Evan's grand romantic gesture. He's not going to feel swept away as easily as that. :p
