In the fall, JR begins to regret asking Apolo to become his coach. He’s ridiculously strict about almost everything in JR’s life. For the first time in years, he has a curfew and lights-out time, and mandatory homework time. (He tried to get out of that one once for a party. Apolo drove him to the rink and bribed the staff into staying open late so JR could do laps until he physically couldn’t anymore.)
They share an apartment off-campus, and JR is slowly becoming convinced that this is a strategic attempt on Apolo’s part to keep him out of any fun. He can hear when JR is on the phone, or up too late, or not awake when he should be. JR swears Apolo can even hear it when he has “alone time.”
Which wouldn’t be necessary if Apolo would let him out of the apartment.
“Apolo, please let me go,” JR begs. He’s done all his coursework, worked extra hard in training, and obeyed every rule, down to the most ridiculous, just to try to con his coach and friend into letting him go to this party. “Just this once, please. I’m begging you, man.”
Apolo moves his laptop and raises an eyebrow at JR, as if to say “o rly?” The look on his face melts any hardcore coachly instincts.
“Fine. You don’t have to be back at curfew, but I expect you back. And you’re getting extra time in the gym tomorrow.”
As JR starts to celebrate and go back to his room to get ready, Apolo ruins it.
“Make sure you bring condoms! I know what you college kids do at parties,” he teases loudly.
Winter is a blur of training and holidays that JR can’t enjoy because Apolo is a tyrant. He’s glad when they go back home, so his mother can override his coach and he can eat his body weight in cookies.
Sure enough, that’s what happens. Except that Apolo goes back to being his best friend and is the real threat to the cookies his mom bakes, especially any kind with chocolate in them.
On New Year’s, the two of them go out. Now that he’s legal, JR doesn’t want to spend the holiday at home with his parents anymore. So he begs Apolo to take him to a club until the older man gives in and they go. Apolo sits at the bar for an hour or two, drinking and glaring as JR flirts, drinks, and dances awkwardly. After a few drinks, Apolo gets out there himself, hoping to take his mind off the fact that he’s getting increasingly jealous of the men and women his charge is with.
When it’s time to go home, JR is sloppy drunk as Apolo guides him to a taxi.
“Do we gotta go back?” he slurs, leaning heavily on his companion. “I’m not tired.”
“No, you’re drunk. You’re going to start the New Year with a massive hangover.”
“Pffft. As if, dude. I’ll be fine.”
Of course, the next morning, JR is nauseous and hides under his blankets until Apolo rips them off and opens the blinds. He laughs when JR whines and tries to burrow into blankets that aren’t there.
“Good morning, sunshine. How do you feel?” he asks, just to be a jerk.
“Go to hell.”
“You know, I think you might be there right now. How is it? I hear Hell is nice this time of year.”
Instead of responding, JR scrambles out of bed and runs to the bathroom. Apolo chuckles, knowing exactly how it feels to over-do it, and goes to the kitchen where Mrs. Celski has breakfast and cookies waiting.

Suddenly, it’s spring and not only does JR have finals to deal with, but Apolo’s birthday is coming up as well. He wants to do something special, since this is his friend’s first birthday as Coach Ohno. He doesn’t want to give the wrong impression, but also wants to show how appreciative he is of Apolo agreeing to be his coach.
“Hey, Simon. What do you think I should get Ap- Coach for his birthday?” JR asks one day at practice, figuring if anyone could help, it would be Simon.
“I dunno, he’s your roomie,” Simon replies with a shrug. “Buy him a bunch of bandanas or something.”
“That’d be enabling him.”
JR ends up buying Apolo one anyway, the most hideous one he could find, as something of a joke gift. He picks out a few small things to go with it, but knows that the god-awful bandana will be his friend’s favorite part. So JR gets AAO embroidered on one of the corners.
With Olympic Trials coming up, Apolo insists that they don’t spend the entire summer at home. JR is kind of surprised that he still insists after Yuki brings over a cake for his beloved son, but apparently Apolo’s competitive streak is stronger than his love of his dad’s baked goods.
And yes, the most hideous bandana in all existence is his favorite birthday gift.
That summer is the summer that JR can no longer deny that he feels more than admiration for Apolo. He’s always had something of a crush on the older skater, but now it’s undeniable and obvious. Simon teases him constantly, though never in front of the object of JR’s crush.
“Dude, can you shut the fuck up for like, five minutes?” JR grumbles, exasperated with all the teasing. They see each other for hours every day, and Apolo has been pushing him harder than usual.
“Maybe you could make a move instead,” Simon replies as they lace up their skates.
“No! Simon, he’s our coach. And I live with him. What if he said no? That would be awkward as hell.”
Simon shakes his head and rolls his eyes, but doesn’t say anything else. They’re about to practice for the relay, and JR’s going to be pushing him at some point. He doesn’t want to get acquainted with the wall.
A few weeks later, when the leaves would be changing color if they weren’t in southern California, it suddenly hits JR that the Olympics he’s training for are in fucking Russia. He knows that there’s no way in hell he’s going to learn enough to not require a translator (unless he goes everywhere with Johnny Weir), but wants to at least know enough to get around.
So JR gives in and asks Simon to go the nearest bookstore after practice.
“Hey, me and Simon are going out. I don’t want to have to walk around Sochi with Johnny for a month so I know what signs say. He’s nice, but I don’t wanna sneeze glitter,” JR tells Apolo before they leave. He doesn’t wait for an answer before walking off.
“You were kinda a dick today, dude,” Simon points out at the bookstore. He’s sitting on a stool that’s meant for reaching the high shelves, watching his teammate flip through Russian language books.
JR glares at him from under his too-long bangs, as if to tell him to shut his mouth.
“What? You were! You have been. What’s up your ass lately?”
It’s quiet for a few moments before JR sighs and looks around to make sure no one is listening.
“Don’t tell anyone, alright?” Simon nods quickly. “Apolo’s been dating somebody.”
“’Somebody’? You don’t even know?”
“He shuts down when I ask. I don’t even know if he’s been seeing a guy or a girl.”
“Did he say he likes guys?”
“No… I’m just saying that’s how little I know.”
“So, like… he hasn’t brought his date home?”
“Not once. I know that he’s stayed the night a few times, though.”
“Ooh, I get it! You’re jealous that he’s getting laid and it’s not you!”
“I am not jealous.”
“Dude, you so obviously are. You’re jealous of whoever it is he’s seeing, and you’re jealous that he’s getting some while your life is skating and school.”
“Simon Cho, you shut your dirty whore mouth.”
Simon laughs until JR shoves him off the stool before going back to browsing.

I especially love the banter between JR and Simon and this line stuck out to me so much ("Simon Cho, you shut your dirty whore mouth.”) I don't know why, but it definitely seems like something that would be said by them.
