omg what the fuck this is becoming so long :| sorry op, pining!jr after his memories return will be written in asap ♥

It’s all fine and dandy that his dad’s okay with it, but it still leaves the migraine-inducing task of figuring out what to say to JR’s parents. When Yuki returns, Apolo’s informed that they’ll be flying back to Washington the next morning; Robert and Sue are both behind him, haggard looks on their faces, and Chris is conspicuously missing. “Wait, but I thought we were staying in California for a couple of days,” Apolo says.

Sue blows her nose into a raggedy tissue and Apolo frowns at the uncharacteristic wrinkling around her eyes, the way she clings onto Robert’s arm like there’s not enough energy in her own limbs to keep her upright. “We talked to the doctors just now,” Robert explains, sighing heavily, “and they need to keep him here until tomorrow morning to make sure they’ve got the diagnosis right. His memory’s been gone for too long already for it to be transient global amnesia, but they’ve found a hospital in Federal Way to move him to for further testing.”

This incompetence is fucking ridiculous is the first thing that comes to mind, but he bites it back, pushes the rise of anger down when fresh tears fill Sue’s eyes and considers the fact that amnesia (and every illness regarding brain trauma, really) has always been a very sketchy disease indeed. Yuki nudges Apolo’s arm and coughs. “It might not be a good time, but there’s something we need to mention about the nature of JR’s relationship with-” Apolo stomps on his sneaker-clad foot and Yuki bites off the end of his sentence with an audible curse.

Apolo breathes out slowly, lips pursed as he speaks. “Your son doesn’t remember who I am, but when he saw me he said he loved me, and asked if we were dating.” He swallows around the lump in his throat and levels an unwavering glance at his self-proclaimed protégé’s parents.

Robert looks a little stunned, but Sue just dabs at her cheeks with more tissue. “Yes, and?” she prompts, lower lip trembling a little bit; there’s no accusatory tinge in her eyes, only blurred curiosity.

He blinks. “I’m sorry, I’m not sure you understand-”

“Apolo,” she says. “I’m his mother. Give me a little more credit, please.” He shakes his head and turns to look at Yuki, who has a small smile on his face. “He’s admired you since he was eleven. I’ve heard him talk about you almost every day since then, and you don’t think I would’ve noticed his feelings?” She stands up a little straighter, crosses her arms over her chest in mock offense.

Apolo groans and slides a hand over his face. “Teenagers can’t hide their emotions for shit, can they?”

“No, not really.” She smiles again and gestures at the door. “Shall we?”

JR’s asleep again when they get into the room, and he and Yuki keep each other accountable with irritating pinches whenever they feel like snapping at the nurses who come in to change IVs and heckle them for real, legitimate answers about the kid’s condition. JR wakes up intermittently throughout the day, speaks to the doctors and his parents and makes absurd expressions at Apolo that are increasingly hard to ignore. He resists the urge to 1) burst out laughing and 2) hide from Robert’s vaguely scandalized looks.

It’s more than he could have hoped for, though, and he’s happy that he hasn’t been driven out of the hospital and a fifty-mile radius away from JR, happy that they trust Apolo when he tells them in private that he’s never even entertained the thought of dating JR, especially before he’d turned legal. (If he keeps telling himself that, maybe it’ll be true.)

It’s too easy, Apolo thinks. Way too fucking easy. And by the end of the next day, he realizes that he’s entirely right.

Anon, you are amazing. You totally captured Apolo and his inner dialogue perfectly whether it be his general butthead-ishness to his rather philosophical analysis on /everything/. Good job! You did so well.
