It’s in the showers that Apolo’s able to corner JR and confront him about his poise issues. It’s somewhat bad timing, as he is just coming out of the shower stall as JR is waiting to come in. Both are clad in only fluffy white towels wrapped around their waists. JR looks like he’s spotted a ghost, which is to say that he looks the same as he has for the past two weeks. Their other teammates are packing up in the adjacent room, having showered during the interview. Soon, the area was cleared and quiet.
“Look kid, I’ve noticed that you’ve been different lately, and I just wanted to say that it’s okay to be nervous coming back. I know the spotlight’s hard to handle, especially after such a shitty accident and the Olympic pressure, but you need to be a little more relaxed. You’re always so jumpy whenever I see you.” He reaches out with both hands and gives JR’s bare shoulders a small squeeze, but they stay tensed.
“Yeah. Okay.” If Apolo wasn’t so blind without his contacts, he would have sworn that JR was blushing beneath his tan. Which was actually pretty damn adorable, in a totally objective way. To lighten the mood, he pokes each star on JR’s chest, causing the younger man to squeak.
“Alright well, I just wanted to talk to you, get a sense of what’s up. If you ever need someone to talk to about anything, I’m here. I’m the stand-in Chris or David for the next couple months, yeah?” He pulls his hands away, feeling strangely disappointed at the loss of warmth beneath his palms.
“S-sure. Right.” JR’s eyes seem distracted, as if he was watching something interesting on Apolo’s neck. He self-consciously scratches his collarbone, but only waterdrops were stuck to his skin. It was getting kind of cold actually. He reaches for a nearby towel and wipes off his wet skin, somehow shocking JR out of his trance.
“Oh my gosh, I have to go. See you man!” JR is gone in a flash. Standing against the lockers, Apolo feels completely confused about the situation. With a sigh, he knows that desperate times call for desperate measures.
“Perhaps he really is just suffering under the weight of the Olympic pride. I remember another little boy feeling quite anxious at his first Games.” Yuki Ohno sips tea over the phone, and Apolo can picture the knowing glance he’s being sent. Sometimes, it’s too awesome that dads are only a phone call away.
“Yeah maybe. But it seems like it’s more than that. I literally just saw an interview with him from a couple weeks ago, and he’s fine. Normal, non-stuttering JR. It’s weird.”
“Well, what has changed between then and now? He has come back to training with your teammates, he is doing very well with little pain. He is with you again.”
“Yeah, and it’s all great. On the ice, he’s the same electric JR that I remember. But off the ice… hell, I’d almost say he’s a blushing schoolgirl or something, with the way he’s been acting.”
“Hmm, an interesting observation. And why would he be acting like that around everyone?”
“It’s not everyone. He was fine with Simon and Travis; I watched him when he thought I wasn’t there. It’s just me.”
“Really?” And Apolo feels another knowing look being shot his way.
“Really what? That he’s only being a schoolgirl around me? That’s crazy, it’s not like he suddenly likes me or something.” Oh. He hears his father chuckle on the other end, and everything fits together.

OMG. This is perfect. Exactly what I wanted. Apolo is so densssse haha and JR is adorable. Cannot wait for more!
