Eyvind is also staying away from Heorot. He is not even harassing the thrall kingdoms. Instead, he been sending his followers to raid deep down the Volga.
On the face of it, this is good for Steinunn because it means there will be no more warriors with black feathers and snake charms creeping 'round his beaches. However, the Volga Rus are closely allied to Steinunn's people - have been since before the days of the last king. And it is terrible for the people of the Volga, for Eyvind has thrown every diplomatic semblance to the wolves and has returned to his career as a ravager. Every day for a week, Steinunn's hall rings with news of some atrocity: villages burned to the ground, farmland salted, children murdered.
On the seventh day, Steinunn decides to damn Eyvind's shaky peace. He cannot let this desecration of his allies stand. But just as he's considering how many warriors the Volga Rus will need, their chieftain Yevgen Broken-Nose arrives at Heorot.
He's alone on the back of a starving horse. His once-magnificent cloak is mud-matted from weeks of travel, and the axe strapped across his back is fit for a woodcutter rather than a warlord. He has been stripped of all his arm rings, and one knee is swollen so badly that he can barely stand.
Steinnun immediately calls for a healer.
After Yevgen is bandaged and fed, Steinunn has the servants bring the strongest mead to his chambers. He brings Yevgen in as well, sits him down at the small table at the window overlooking the beach.
"I have warriors ready," Steinnun says, after a while.
"Do not bother to send them. Everything is gone." Yevgen grinds his knuckles into the table. "You cannot fathom how many people are dead. Keep your swords for when he comes for you."
"Will he come?"
"I don't know." Yevgen stares at his meadbowl. "He is not warring for the land, Steinunn. He is sick of building a kingdom. He wants to live up to his name."
"Snake."
"No. Dragon." Yevgen begins to shake. "Sitting on his hoard. Burning innocents alive. In - he - My son, oh gods, he killed my son..."
And he breaks down, weeping piteously into Steinunn's shoulder.
