Johnny wants to tell him that he's not actually obligated to make conversation right now, but instead he just says, "That's what it's supposed to look like, Evan. You're not supposed to be able to see your foundation from space."
"I tan easily," Evan says in this practiced way that makes Johnny sure he's said it a million times before. "It's natural."
Johnny smacks the side of his head lightly. "No, it's not."
Evan doesn't say anything, just watches as Johnny pulls out an eyelash curler.
"What is that?"
"Hold still, okay?"
To curl Evan's eyelashes, Johnny has to lean over him and put his face nearly level with Evan's and stare into his eyes. It feels weirdly intimate, and Evan's just staring at him blankly as he does it, Johnny's fingertips brushing his skin. When he's done, he steps back and examines his work.
"Not bad," he says. He pulls out a big fluffy brush and sweeps on some finishing powder. "There, you're done."
"Thanks."
Johnny does his best with Evan's makeup, but there's nothing he can do to make Evan look much better than he usually does. It's too bad Evan doesn't have any photo shoots coming up, because Johnny could really do some good there. Evan looks over him and nods his approval, which is sort of horrible but Evan looks good so Johnny doesn't mind.
"Okay, you ready to go back to the men's locker room?" Johnny says. "Everyone's going to think we're doing scandalous things in here. Because I'm such a bad influence on you, and all."
Evan flushes, and Johnny thinks, oops. Maybe that's not the right joke to make when he sort of actually does want to do scandalous things with Evan, in a weird way.
Evan just says, "Let's go," and stands, zipping up Johnny's makeup case.
"Yeah," Johnny says, feeling the anxiety welling up again. "Let's go skate."
For just a second, just because Evan's not in his own body and doesn't have his usual emotionless mask on, something flickers in his face and he looks terrified. Johnny realizes that Evan's going through exactly what he is right now.
It helps, just a little.
