FILLED: a neighborly day for a beauty 1/?? anonymous March 25 2010, 04:42:39 UTC
Most of the time she loves her job, but there are mornings she wakes up and she knows, just knows, that it's going to be one of those days.

It starts when she gets to work (false: it starts when her alarm goes off and she realizes it's a) Monday and b) raining, which is pretty much the kiss of death when you have to spend the day with a bunch of ankle-biters. Oh god, someone's going to magic marker the walls, she just knows it), already running late, and sees Evan waiting outside the classroom doors with Frank. Sometimes she thinks Evan thinks he'll get extra credit for being the first one there. She doesn't have the heart to tell him he won't. Or that he won't get grades at all. Pre-school isn't really big on introducing the 4.0 GPA system.

"Good morning, Miss Y," he says politely. He smiles at her and then looks to Frank, who nods, like Evan did a good job saying hello.

Kristi sighs. "Good morning, Evan," she says. "You're here early."

"The early bird catches the worm," he says. He stumbles over it, like he's trying very hard to remember the exact phrase, and he looks so serious that she has to bite her lip to keep from laughing. She looks at Frank, hoping for a kids say the dardnest things eye roll or smile or something, but all she gets from him is an expression just as serious as Evan's.

"That's right, they do," she says, opening the door and flicking on the lights. Evan trails behind her, shedding his coat and waving goodbye to Frank.

The good thing about Evan is that even though he's early all the time, he doesn't cry when Frank leaves and he can play quietly, by himself, for longer stretches of time than most of the other kids. So there's that. And by the time he starts to get bored of sitting at a table and coloring (very carefully, inside the lines) the others have started to filter in.

He abandons his picture to follow Tanith around as she shows off her new dress to everyone.

"Tanith, don't run inside, okay?" Kristi says, after Tanith runs away from Evan for the umpteenth time. Tanith nods and walks the rest of the way across the room to where Ben's playing with the blocks. In a heartbeat the two of them are stacking towers and karate chopping them down.

Kristi stoops to pick up a few of Evan's forgotten crayons from where they've rolled onto the floor. There's a bandanna down there, too -- Apolo loses them like the other kids lose mittens, or socks. She's putting the bandanna in Apolo's cubby, taking mental attendance, when she hears:

"MISS Y, MISS Y, LOOK AT MY BOOTS."

Kristi looks up to see Johnny hopping from foot to foot, dripping wet. His nanny is trying to get him to stand still so she can take his raincoat off.

"Johnny, do not be yelling," Galina says, frowning.

"Look at my boots!" Johnny says, quieter this time, but no less excited. He sticks out one leg so Kristi can get a better look at his shoes.

"I love them. Are they new?"

He nods, beaming, even as Galina says, "Off. Time for inside shoes now," and taps his arm until he sits down and pulls off his shoes.

Tanith runs over then, Evan not far behind her, and says, all in a delighted rush, "Hi Johnny hi Galina Johnny I love your shoes look the spots match my dress!"

"Tan, you're going to get your dress wet." Tanith's bending over so the material from her dress hangs over the boot that's still on Johnny's foot. They're both too busy pointing at the matching colors notice. It's Evan who pulls them out of their reverie.

"They're pink," he says, blinking, like his brain is trying to process the information. Kristi can see the way Galina bristles, tension gathering all along her spine.

"And blue." Johnny points helpfully at the navy part, the part that matches Tanith's dress. Evan blinks again.

"Do svidaniya," Galina says, and Johnny parrots it back to her, turning his face up so she can kiss his forehead before running off to play.

"Be good," Galina calls after him, but Johnny's already gone. She smiles at Kristi, the tired smile of someone who's met Johnny and isn't exactly sad to be rid of him for an hour or six. Kristi waves as she leaves, and takes a deep breath. Maybe today won't be that bad, after all.

Of course as soon as she thinks it there's a loud pop followed by dead silence. And then someone shrieks, "IT WAS A ACCIDENT," and someone else starts crying.

"Patrick, it's okay," Kristi says without turning around; she starts praying to anyone who will listen that she still has some extra balloons in her drawer. She thinks she does. The faces might even be drawn on them already. (The first time Patrick's balloon had popped mid-day, he'd cried for twenty minutes, babbling incoherently, until Shaun had wandered over, pointed at the balloon, and asked, "Where'd his eyes go?" and Kristi had realized she'd given him a balloon without a face.)

Outside, there's a loud clap of thunder and the rain beats down harder against the windows. Someone else starts crying, and Patrick, not to be outdone, wails that much louder. Yeah, she totally jinxed it.

OP HERE, EXCUSE ME WHILE I RAVISH YOU WITH ETERNAL LOVE anonymous March 25 2010, 08:19:02 UTC
OMG YOU ARE MY FAVORITE PERSON EVER YOU FILLED IT!!!!!!!!!! <3333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333

And oh man, it is everything I hoped for and more! (At least so far!)

YOUR EVAN IS AMAZING, HE COULD NOT POSSIBLY BE MORE PERFECT. And Frank! He's clearly teaching him early, so it'll be easier for him to be fluent in cliches. XD

And you made Kristi the teacher! THAT IS SO PERFECT! When this idea originally lept into my brain, I kept trying to picture who would be the teacher, and I never could settle on anyone, and OH MAN KRISTI IS SO PERFECT, AND YOU ARE AWESOME FOR THINKING OF THAT.

Also, earlier today, I re-read this whole prompt and it occurred to me, "oh man, it might be even better if the coaches were their nannies/caretakers, not necessarily their parents". AND YOU DID THAT WITHOUT ME EVEN SAYING ANYTHING.

PATRICK AND HIS BALLOON! Oh my god, that whole section is so perfect, I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START. Just...that whole section = SO MUCH YES LOLLLLLLLLLLL

Other things I loved: Johnny in general, Apolo losing his bandannas like other kids lose mittens (I lol'd IRL at that), Evan coloring inside the lines, GALINA, "They're pink," he says, blinking, like his brain is trying to process the information., your entire Evan/Tanith/Johnny dynamic, DID I MENTION YOUR EVAN CHARACTERIZATION, and...oh my god, I JUST LOVE YOU A LOT AND CAN'T WAIT TO SEE MORE

(PS btw, if you're the same anon who said they'd fill it but might not include all the figure skaters I mentioned, that's totally, completely fine! I'm obviously just more familiar with the figure skaters, which is why that's what most of the people in the original prompt are, but like I said originally, feel free to include whoever you want! THE MORE TINY!OLYMPIANS, THE BETTER, AMIRITE? :DDD)

"I'm really sorry," JR says, looking sadly at Patrick.

Patrick takes a shaky breath. "S'okay." He hugs his new balloon close to his chest.

"Very good," Kristi says, resting her hands on the tops of both boys' heads. "Now go get ready for circle time."

She gives them a gentle push and they both break away. JR runs off towards Apolo, who's busy making faces at himself in the mirror hanging in the dress-up corner. Patrick walks very slowly over to the stack of carpet squares used for circle time. With one hand carefully holding onto his balloon, he rifles through the mats until he finds his.

Kristi braces for disaster -- at least once a day someone knocks over the entire stack of mats, and you'd think she'd stop stacking them like that, but space is limited as it is -- but Patrick just tugs at his until it's free, sets it on the floor, and then sits down. He's got his balloon string looped around his fist, the balloon floating pathetically above his head, and sitting all alone he looks like a "depression hurts" commercial. It's hard not to laugh.

She manages, though, and claps her hands to get everyone's attention. Most of them look up and start to make their way over to the mats, bumping into each other like human bumper cars, excited for the day.

"Apolo," she says when he doesn't make any motion to leave the mirror. She's about to go over there when JR doubles back -- losing his place near the front of the line, which means he probably won't get to sit near the window like he loves, but -- and tugs on Apolo's sleeve to get his attention. Apolo stops baring his teeth at his reflection and hurries across the room.

JR's the last one to sit down, dragging his mat to the only empty spot. Shaun fingers tucked under his mat and scooching his whole body to make sure there's enough room. Of course, that moves him closer to Meryl, whose fingers practically start twitching. She's like a moth to a flame -- all the kids are. It's funny, really, because Kristi kind of understands where they're coming from. But that doesn't mean it's okay (and god, there's a speech Kristi won't be sad she has to stop giving. I know Shuan's hair is pretty -- sorry, Shaun, I mean crazy. Okay, wicked -- but you cannot touch it. Yes, Johnny, you can ask permission. But you can't ignore him if he says no) and that doesn't mean it's any less tiresome to deal with -- and her hands are petting Shaun's head before Kristi can say anything.

"Nooooooooo," Shaun wails, ducking away from her while trying to stay on his mat. "PLEASE STOP."

To her credit, Meryl stops as soon as he says that -- and there's another talk Kristi is glad she's repeated one million times, because if anything gets them to stop picking on each other it's the "when someone says 'please stop,' you HAVE TO STOP," method. She's sunk when they start using it for evil (she once had a demon child who would say it when he was told to eat vegetables or go to bed, and oh, those parent-teacher phone calls were not fun for anyone) -- but for now it's the perfect solution.

"Meryl, what's the rule?"

"No touching Shaun's hair unless I ask." Meryl stares at her lap. "Sorry," she says to Shaun without prompting. He pointedly does not accept her apology; he just sits with his body held at an awkward angle, like he's afraid to lean in any direction that might put him too close to a classmate's wandering hands.

Kristi sighs. It's not even nine-thirty.

"Meryl, come sit over here." She points to the only empty spot, where she usually sits, between Yu-Na and Zhenya.

"But I wanna sit next to --"

"Meryl," is Kristi has to say, in the tone that comes along with "I'm going to count to three" before Meryl's up, hands curling into fists around the edges of her mat as she relocates. Kristi sits in the space Meryl's vacated, absently patting Shaun's back as he scoots closer to her.

Kristi takes a deep breath and relishes in the brief silence while the kids wait for her to speak.

"Good morning, everybody!"

It's nice how it never fails to make her happy, hearing them all yell it back to her. Better than nice, really. She grins at them, all their smiling faces and wriggling bodies, masses of energy and joy that she only wants to strangle some of the time.

"Who wants to remind everyone where we're going this week?"

All their hands shoot up in the air. Stéphane raises both his hands and Kristi's not made of stone so she says, "Yes, Mr. Lambiel?"

"To the zoooooo!"

It takes five minutes to calm everyone down after that. Kristi doesn't even try, she just lets them spaz out, their voices overlapping, getting shriller and shriller as they try to speak over each other about zebras and lions and a thousand other things she doesn't catch.

When they do quiet down, Kristi has them say which animals they're excited to see. They've been talking a lot about different animals lately, all in preparation for the upcoming trip, but most of them say the same thing. Monkeys. Bears. Tigers. Dogs.

"Mongooses." Johnny says it like he just told everyone he wants to see hippos, or giraffes, or some other slightly exotic animal he learned from watching Madagascar fifteen times. The rest of the class reacts like he said poop. They're laughing hysterically -- probably more at the word mongoose than at Johnny himself -- which makes Johnny's cheeks turn pink. "They're REAL, I SWEAR," he says, chin jutting out.

The class looks to Kristi for confirmation, and she nods even though odds are she couldn't pick a mongoose out of a lineup of a mongoose and something else in the mongoose-family. (Seriously, is it a rodent? A marsupial? She has no idea. Jeez, what the hell is Galina teaching Johnny about in her spare time?)

"I'm sure we'll see lots of them on Friday."

Johnny visibly relaxes. At least, until Apolo roars instead of saying that he's most excited to see the lions. But that scares everyone, even Kristi, so.
