This is the part he didn't mean to happen: he's not gonna lie, landing himself in the hospital was never his intention. It's just, well, he didn't realize how boring retirement would be until he actually was retired, and by that point it was way too late because he wasn't going to be one of those douches who announces he's going to retire and then comes back three months later. He has a bit more pride and respect for himself and his sport than that, thanks. And even then, it wasn't something that came right away, instead creeping up insidiously like some creeping, insidious thing: it was only after criss-crossing the country who knows how many times in the span of a few months, promoting himself, speaking to kids, getting way less sleep than he should be, that he realized, after finally getting a week of having nothing big on his plate and copious amounts of free time he's never had before, that, wow, this retirement thing kind of sucks.
The first time it happens, Apolo rolls out of bed and makes an automatic grab for his skates since he has an early morning practice session before he realizes, oh. He tries to put it out of his mind, but it throws his whole day off and he can't sleep that night until finally he throws his covers aside and reaches for his iPhone before he remembers that JR has an early morning class and changes his mind. Instead, he throws a hoodie on over his pajamas and decides to go for a drive.
With his window rolled down, the wind is cool against him even covered as he is in his hoodie, summer finally giving way to fall. The streets are empty save for the car next to his, stopped at the same stoplight that's been red way too long even though no one else is around. It's then that his jumbled thoughts are interrupted by the honking of the horn of the car next to him, and when he glances over, the guy at the wheel revs up his engine and makes a forward motion with his head.
Apolo smirks. If there's one thing he can't resist, it's a race.
When the light turns green, they're off, weaving through the city streets at top speed. And even though he knows that they could be caught at any moment and what a PR disaster that would turn out to be, he feels a smile start to spread across his face.
He hasn't felt this kind of exhilaration since Vancouver.
