“Of course I was going to switch my models. JR had a lot of talent that I could see, and Jeremy didn’t. I mean…I guess he was cute, but.” Evan stopped himself, fearing for his heterosexuality. “He was handsome, but I like the way JR smiles better. He’s got a better look for what I had in mind.” He nodded to himself this time, deciding that the way that was phrased was better. Looking away for a moment, he spoke again.
“Johnny started calling me a mongoose. Which I don’t even know what that is.”

“The finale is here!” Tim Gunn announced, applauding as the last three contestants stood in front of him. Johnny could not believe what had come over the judges, as they allowed not only Evgeni, but Evan as well, to stand here beside him. Johnny was more than bitter; even though Stephane overused zebra print, he at least knew what decency was. And class, which is something these two lacked. Johnny didn’t even want to go into detail about how Evgeni just let Brian, his model, parade around naked in the Loreal hair salon. This was injustice.
“Now we send you three off to come up with your designs, and present them to us at the show. Good luck! We wish you all the best, and I’ll be there to check on you!” Tim Gunn wished them all well, practically pushing them out the door.

Johnny finished packing his stuff first, a perfect suitcase at his feet and messenger bag around his shoulder over the top of his fur coat. Peering in the bathroom one more time to make sure he didn’t leave any moisturizer, he met Evan’s eyes, who was in there, gathering his shaving cream, razor and toothbrush.
“Well, I’ll see you soon, hmm? I’m interested to see what you’re going to come up with, mongoose.” Evan shook his head, turning away to pick up his bag.
“You know, I don’t understand you, Johnny. You call me a mongoose, and then you come in here, and I don’t know what you want from me.” He began to ramble, but as he straightened himself, Johnny pressed his lips to the stubble-covered cheek of the too-tanned man, pulling away and moving out the door.
Evan stood there, dropping his bag again.

Fashion week came soon enough. Mirai and Daisuke were buzzing with excitement, each of their outfits perfectly and painstakingly crafted to perfection. These weren’t just clothes to Johnny. These clothes were art.
Evgeni went first, his clothes nothing special. Brian was of course there, clad in as little clothes as possible. Johnny enjoyed the show, if only for that. Evgeni was too off the wall. And the patterns he used on those coats were hideous.
Johnny went second, his clothes flowing in certain places, tight in others, embellishments like feathers, tassles and fur accenting the clothes perfectly. The gradient colors made them all pop in different ways, and both Mirai and Daisuke rocked their looks.
Evan was last. Johnny was able to watch Evan’s show, and he couldn’t believe his eyes. The clothes that the idiot made were actually…somewhat decent. They were clean, plunging necklines and gorgeous ruffles, tight fitting jackets and perfect-length pants. They were downright chic, and yet so very Evan at the same time. Maybe blind hobo didn’t apply so much here. His work ethic seemed to pay off.
He came up to Evan after the show, hands in his pockets.
“They looked great. Your stuff, I mean.” Johnny complimented him, smiling lopsidedly. “You put a lot of work into them, and it showed. The audience seemed to really like them.”
Evan looked up from Yu-na’s dress, where he was quickly stitching it back together before pulling it off of her entirely.
“You really mean that? Thanks. I did my best. Yours were really gorgeous too. I loved the colors you used.” He replied, trying on his own smile. It was more awkward than anything else. But it was genuine.

“The winner of this season of Project Runway is…Evan Lysacek.”
The man practically dove off the stage, squeezing Heidi tight in a bear hug while JR and Yu-na tackled each other, laughing and hooting. Johnny clapped beside them, flanked by his models, who were clapping and smiling too. He couldn’t say this came as a huge surprise. Evan was most improved after all. Sometimes the ‘token straight guys’ do win.

“Evan.” Johnny stopped him outside the hotel, all of their models already having left. (Johnny remembered hearing something about a certain half-Japanese man coming to pick up JR and take him out; just the thought made him grin in relief.)
“Congratulations. You really deserved it.” He patted Evan on the shoulder, smiling proudly. It was like seeing a little kid grow up into a champion. Evan’s face turned red.
“Thank you Johnny. I can’t believe I beat both you and that Evgeni guy. I thought for sure you were going to win.” He admitted, shuffling his feet awkwardly. Johnny shook his head.
“No way, I saw the way Heidi and everyone else was looking at your stuff. Those are things that people are going to be wearing sometime soon. They’re going to be available to everyone, and everyone’s going to enjoy them. My stuff was too costume-like anyway. I’d be better designing clothes for musicals and movies. You beat me there.” Evan couldn’t help but laugh at this, Johnny giving him a confused look. “And what about that is so funny, Mister Champion?”
“Nothing!” He snickered, covering his mouth. “I just never thought I’d be hearing you say this to me. I’m flattered.”
“Yeah, well, don’t let it go to your head. With this, I’ve gotten enough exposure to go into the big businesses. I don’t care if you’ve got your best buddy Vera Wang helping you out, you’ll be seeing me up there with you, creating my own lines.” Johnny pushed the man a little, almost challenging him. Evan could only laugh more.
“No, no, I believe you. I doubt anyone could stop you, anyway. You’re like a crazy train, or something. Anyway, I wanted to thank you, you know, for pushing me. I don’t think I could of won without you.”
“Thank me? No thanks needed, dear mongoose. Unless of course you’re going to buy me some new Dolce & Gabbana bags. Lord knows I need them.” He emphasized this by showing off his bag. It was last season’s, and not in any way still in high fashion. It was driving him mad.
“I don’t know about bags. But I was thinking about this, instead.” Without warning, Evan took Johnny’s chin in one hand, pressing their lips together. The kiss was soft; Johnny forgot entirely about D&G bags as he kissed back, arms circling Evan’s neck as he moved closer. The hum of a bus passing by them reminded them both where they were, and they broke the kiss. Evan tried to hold back his laugh as Johnny gaped up at him.
“What happened to that girl story you told us all? You were the Hetero-man! No one was going to touch you with a 10-foot pole for fear you’d all castrate us. I knew you were gay!” Johnny exclaimed, almost dropping his bag on the pavement. Evan outright laughed, his face turning beet red.
“Well, you were right. Come on, let’s go celebrate. I’ll take you out for drinks. And maybe those bags.” Evan shouldered his bag, reaching out to take Johnny’s hand in his own as the moved down the sidewalk, looking for the nearest bar with their lights still on.

oh, Evan. the only thing that would've made this better would've been adding something like "I draw inspiration from my fellow contestants, like Plushenko and...that Swiss guy." XD
