“Johnny? Johnny, wake up. Don’t pass out on me.” His name? That voice was familiar, too.
“Evan?” He strained to open his eyes, his vision blurry before eyes and a face became clear. Evan was bent over him, concerned expression present on his features.
“Yeah, it’s me. They beat the shit out of you…” Evan mused, surveying the damage. Never in his life did Johnny think that Evan’s voice would be so soothing to hear. He couldn’t really tell what he could feel and couldn’t just yet, but he moved to stand up, a hand groping at the wall behind him. Evan held his own arm out, moving to steady the smaller man.
“No they didn’t. I’m fine. I didn’t need your help.” Johnny pushed Evan’s hand away, carefully stepping over the incapacitated bodies and moving down the street. Evan didn’t follow for a beat; he was too dumbfounded by what just came out of the other figure skater’s mouth.
“You didn’t need my help? Are you kidding? Sure looked like you could have handled them on your own.” He started after Johnny, steadying the man when he wobbled, only to be pushed away yet again. Johnny turned to face him, an almost indignant look on his face.
“I could have handled myself just fine! I know you want to be the hero and get everyone to like you, but it’s just not going to happen, Superman. You have to get that through your big stupid head.” Evan could only stare at him after Johnny attempted once again to depart. He got as far as the corner before collapsing against the side of the building, chest heaving with exertion. Evan grabbed him this time, grip firm, and yet still gentler than expected.
“Okay, I get your whole ego thing, but seriously, you’re being ridiculous. Your lip is busted and you’re covered in bruises. This was not something you could handle. People like that don’t talk it out.” Johnny’s eyes never met Evan’s, but he had been listening.
“If you’re expecting a thank you, you’re not going to get one. Now let me go. I’m going back to my hotel.” Sticking his nose into the air, Johnny attempted once again to remove himself from Evan, but to no avail this time.
“I don’t need a thank you, but I’d least like you to let me fix you up and give you some ice at my place. It’s closer than your hotel, and much safer than letting you continue walking back.” Evan’s tone left no room for discussion, and Johnny only nodded, half-heartedly following along after Evan.

“There. This should be better.” He gave the pack back to Johnny, who rested the thing right above his belly, where the darkest bruises had mottled his skin. Johnny hadn’t said thank you for anything yet; not for Evan allowing him to lean on him the way back, or for Evan tossing a million things off the couch in his apartment so he could spread Johnny out there. But Evan supposed that it was a blessing the man wasn’t complaining or fighting back anymore.
He sat on the arm of the chair, looking over Johnny’s exposed skin to see if he could spot anymore growing bruises and bumps. But nothing jumped out at him, his eyes wandering to linger on Johnny’s lips, his busted lower lip now bright red and swollen. Evan had to look away before Johnny noticed.
“You know, I’m going to have to pay extra for that hotel room, right? Because you decided it was better for me to stay here. I don’t even have any of my stuff!” Johnny sighed dramatically, fingers brushing over his lip. Evan resisted the urge to smack them away, instead settling for a glare if Johnny dared to upset the ointment and medication that Evan had so carefully applied. The smaller man dropped his hand almost instantly, rolling his eyes.
“You don’t need any of your stuff; you can use mine. And I’ll pay the extra balance for the room. Stop worrying about it.” Evan huffed, folding his arms. “You’re such a girl sometimes.”
“I am not a girl!” Johnny tried to sit up to fight back, wincing, as his injuries wouldn’t quite let him move just yet. Evan ended up easing him back down into the cushions of the couch.
“You sure are acting like one. So relax. I’ll make you something to eat. I think I’ve got like…soup or something.” He stood, padding over into the kitchen. Johnny pouted until he was sure Evan couldn’t see him anymore and he exhaled, hands toying with the icepack he had been given. It was hard to keep the tiny smile off his face; even though he was hurt, he couldn’t deny that spending all this time with Evan wasn’t bad at all. But he sure didn’t need to know that.

“You know, you really scared me back there. I don’t care if you think you could of handled it or not, you could have been really hurt.” Evan’s voice was soft and almost nervous in quality. Johnny never heard him sound like this. “What if they had broken a bone? Or given you a concussion? They could of killed you, Johnny.” He turned to look at him, eyes clear with worry. Johnny rolled his eyes again.
“Okay mom, I hear you. I’ll be careful and never take shortcuts again.” He huffed. “I learned my lesson, you know.” Evan’s face only softened slightly, a hand moving from his lap to move the icepack, studying the bruises. They had only darkened in color, deep purples and blues painting once perfectly white skin. Johnny could feel his face heat up; why was Evan studying him like that so intensely? It’s just a couple bruises. Evan turned more towards him, eyes meeting his again.
“I heard someone crying and I didn’t know what was going on. Thank god I found you.” He swallowed, watching Johnny’s face closely. “Were you scared at all?”
It took Johnny almost a whole minute to answer. He had deflated from his usual pompous and flamboyant self upon seeing how genuinely frightened Evan had been for his safety; how worried Evan had been over someone other than himself. What if he…
“Yeah. I was. I was really scared.” Johnny couldn’t hold eye contact with Evan, staring at the now foreign looking shapes on the TV. Some informercial or something, but it was as though it was from Mars with how distant Johnny suddenly felt. “I thought they were going to kill me.” This was the human side of Johnny, the one who wasn’t invincible from death threats or street punks. “I don’t know what I would of done if you hadn’t showed up.” He mumbled, running a hand through his hair in habit.
“Johnny…” Evan sighed sadly, eyes traveling over the large bruise that spread across Johnny’s cheekbone, visible in the dancing lights the TV projected onto them. Without thinking much more than how relieved he was Johnny was all right, Evan leaned in, brushing soft lips over the bruise. Johnny’s breath caught in his throat, his eyes widening.
“Evan, what-“ He began, but Evan pressed his lips to Johnny’s instead, tasting dried blood and medicine and god he was so glad Johnny was alive. It was only a moment later that Johnny began to kiss back, his eyes slipping shut as his hands came up to frame Evan’s jaw, pressing closer, even as the sting of his lips became stronger. That didn’t matter; that would heal in time. He needed this more, right now.
“And you said I was the girl. You look like you’re going to cry.” Johnny commented upon pulling back, licking his lips as Evan tried to compose himself.
“I’m not going to cry! I’m just- so happy. I’m so happy.” He buried his face in Johnny’s front, shoulders shaking in relief.
“Ah! Evan! Ow, ow, my bruises! Cut it out! You can kiss me, but stop doing that! Ow!”

I really loved this line, too: This was the human side of Johnny, the one who wasn’t invincible from death threats or street punks.
Because as strong and awesome as Johnny is, that kind of stuff has to get you down sometimes, and that sentence was a lovely way of expressing it.
Basically, anon? I loved this. Thank you for writing it! :D
