Sammy looked like he was sleeping, in fact it was a running joke that the youngest Winchester slept like the dead. Dean didn't find it funny anymore.
He held Sam's hand, cold and already hardening within his grip. He brushed floppy brown hair out of his brother's eyes, because Sam couldn't do it for himself. He fought not to go mad with his grief, thoughts of having to go on without his brother leading him easily down that road.
Sam was his mission. The one thing he had always counted on to be there. And he had failed. He had let Sam die.
