Ooh, another Ten/Jack Flowers snippet! I love the wintercompanion challenges, because they really seem to inspire you with that series :) Mind you, I wouldn't mind seeing some more of Frost soon, if that's possible :)

Favourite lines, as for so many others, are these:

He was smiling, but it wasn't his usual manic grin. It was a small, soft expression that made him look disconcertingly vulnerable.

"Did you have your eyes closed that whole way?" he asked, cracked, strained voice warming.

Jack blinked. "Yeah -- it was too disorienting, otherwise." He wasn't sure what the Doctor was getting at.

"You trusted me that much?" the Doctor asked, and Jack understood.

"Of course. Always," he said, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

For some reason, I think the Doctor's not all that used to being trusted so implicitly by people who know him well - as opposed to random strangers, whom he simply expects to trust him because he tells them to ;)

Lovely, as always!

Considering that this comm is where the Flowers!verse really started (the other key impetus being that comment thread in the 2007 OT3 Ficathon), it only seems natural to Flowers stories here. ;)

Well, and especially coming from Jack, who has been through the wringer multiple times thanks to the Doc, but manages to keep his trust/affection/faith in the Doctor intact . . . Like I said in a comment above, for these two, "I trust you" is quite possibly more deeply moving than, "I love you."

Thanks! I sure hope to get back to "Frost" soon! I really want to tell that story! :D

Except that it seems to me that, by this time in this 'verse, Jack's got over all that. They survived the Year together, and they're now established lovers without even the need for artificial stimulants, which does suggest a degree of closeness and connection I'd suspect neither of them has had with anyone else before.

This, and a comment you made to someone on the Spoon about there being lots of Holy Grail to go around once Rose reunites, makes me think: how's she going to react to the fact that not only have the Doctor and Jack been lovers in her absence but they're also able to do it without help? Whereas she and the Doctor will need help. There's going to be a really interesting dynamic on board the TARDIS once all three of them are together again :)

Oh, very much so, but it's also still a very real aspect of their past, part of how they got to be where they are. Both of them are aware of that, too.

You're right -- things *will* be interesting for our three heroes when they try to readjust their dynamics in "Frost." The question is, do the feelings they have for each other go deep enough to survive the changes to their situation? Hence the title, of course . . . ;)

*is now worried...* :(

Eh, don't be *too* worried. You know I like happy endings, though maybe with angst along the way. If you wish, reconsider the title of "Frost" (and the Tolkien verse it refers to), along with the last line of "Striking Roots" (the title of which is yet another clue).

Well, yeah, I was thinking something like that, really :) And I love the hurt you give us because the comfort is so lovely!
