Pride
I was rewatching VotD not too long ago, and I *finally* made out what the Doctor shouts when he kicks the broken teleport: "I can do anything!" So...Jack and the Doctor both know they have abilities that outstrip those of most everyone around them. But that knowledge often leads to overconfidence. How many times have they both been so certain they can handle a situation, only to find things spiraling even further out of control? Or made choices for others because they believe they know best, only to watch that person's trust fall apart? How might pride come between them? (I'm in angst mode right now, but I'm certain there's a lighter angle to this one, too--games of one-upsmanship?)
Love
I was talking to an off-LJ friend of mine earlier today, and she said that she thinks Jack confuses friendship with love. (I disagree...but it got me thinking...) How do Jack and the Doctor understand love? (And/or friendship? And/or commitment?) How do their long lives and the times/places where they came of age affect the way they understand their relationships? (With each other? With others?) What might it mean for them to make a commitment to each other? (Could either of them do that?)
