At the vineyards of Quay

“Wow! That was some great teamwork!” said the doctor as he entered the Tardis and casually threw his coat down on the jumpseat.

“It really was!” said Captain Jack Harkness who followed right behind him, and placed his coat over the railings.

“And thanks for saving my life captain.”

“As always, my pleasure!” he replied, hoping in vain he´d at least get a hug out of it. But the doctor had other plans.

“I think the two of us deserve a treat, don´t you?”

“You know me, doc! I never say no to a treat. Well…I never say no, period!” He batted his eyelashes at the doctor who gave a pleased smirk in reply.

“Have you ever tasted the wine from the vineyards of Quay on planet Nool?”

“Can´t say that I have.”

“Oh, you absolutely have to! I mean, you have tasted earth wine in the eighteen hundreds haven´t you? And you have tasted it in the 51´st century too. You know what humans were capable of achieving with all that time to refine and perfect their winemaking skills. Well this is a planet that has developed it into a true art over more than a million years. A sip of it will feel like a symphony orchestra in your mouth. Hundreds of different notes and tastes all blending together into the sweetest and most harmonious music.” He paused and relished the memory with his eyes closed. “Plus” he continued “the Noolians, they are a bi-gender species.”

“Really?” the captains’ eyebrows shot up “Now that is something I would really like to see!”

“I bet you would! But you have to promise to behave!”

Jack put one hand on his heart and the other in the air. “I swear! I´ll be a really good boy! Anything to please you doc.”

The doctor glanced at him in disbelief but decided to take the risk and started to set the coordinates and fired up the Tardis. “This trip might take a while and I´d really like some alone-time so shall we reconvene here in…three hours?”

“It´s a date doctor!” said Jack with slight emphasis on the word date.

The doctor was already on his way out through one of the many doors but he turned to look at the captain, smiled and said: “Right, Jack. It´s a date.” and then he was gone.

Jack´s heart jumped a little as he tried to interpret what had just happened. Had the doctor really responded to his relentless flirting? Finally? He decided not to go overboard but tread very carefully from now on. If the doc was beginning to come around he didn´t want to jeopardize it in any way. He went looking for a bathroom to freshen up and relax for a while.

……

Three hours later the dashing captain stood waiting by the console feeling thoroughly refreshed and more than a little bit nervous. The doctor didn’t keep him waiting as he appeared soon after dressed in his blue suit and looking great.

“Well that was time well spent” he said while looking Jack up and down.

“I´d say! You look fantastic doctor!” he replied with a big smile.

“Thank you! Now let´s go.” He headed for the door and Jack followed. Once outside they were both struck by the fresh air, the wonderful smell of newly cut grass and honeysuckle. A big pink sun was casting its rays and its warmth over fields and fields of bushes.

“That is the vines,” said the doctor. “quite a sight isn’t it?” Jack was at a loss for words and could only nod his head. And then the doctor took his hand. They looked at each other for a brief moment before the doctor pulled him with him.

“This way.”

They walked like that for a little while, hand in hand. Jack tried to act cool but his heart was beating really fast. They came to a little tavern, took a table and sat down. A waiter appeared, a being with the tall and slender body of a young man and a face of a delicate and beautiful woman, skin like silk and eyes like emerald. Jack tried not to stare at the beauty. He was determined to not waver from his promise to behave.

The doctor ordered a bottle of wine which they didn’t have to wait long for.

“I drink to your health doctor.” said Jack as he lifted his glass.

“And I to yours, captain.” They clanked their glasses together and smiled. The wine tasted even better than the doctor had described and they were both taken back with the sublime aroma, leaned back in their chairs with eyes closed for a while. When Jack opened his, he found the doctor looking at him, smiling.

“Told you didn’t I?” he asked “Isn´t it the most wonderful wine you ever tasted?” Jack nodded.

“It´s the most wonderful thing I have ever tasted, every category. And god knows I´ve tasted a lot of things.” Just as he had finished the sentence he regretted it. Damn his habit of making sexual innuendos, he thought, but the doctor didn’t seem too bothered. In fact he giggled. He actually giggled. Jack had never heard a sweeter sound. They drank some more and talked and laughed until the sun set and the stars came out. The wine and the night made them both almost euphoric.

“Doctor. I must ask you something.” said Jack then, feeling the need to steer the conversation a little.

“Anything Jack. Ask me anything you want.”

“Of all the companions you’ve had over the years. Didn’t you ever fall in love?”

“Of course I did. Many times…but…you know how it is. They always end up leaving me for one reason or another.” He looked a little sadden.

“I never would.” Jack said with his most sincere voice “If you let me, I would stay with you till the day I die.”

The doctor looked at him in silence for a long while.

“I believe you would Jack.”

“So?”

“I have resisted your flirtations for a very long time. Not because I don’t want you but because love always complicates things and I want to keep things simple with you. But maybe…” he paused and Jack held his breath “…maybe it is time for me to say yes.” Jack jumped up from his seat, grabbed the doctors’ hand and pulled him up and into his arms.

“Yes! Yes doctor, it is definitely time.” And then they kissed.

An azure blue moon rose over the horizon as they slowly walked back to the Tardis in a new and different way. Together. Hand in hand. Companions, friends and soul mates. Through infinity and beyond.

May or may not be continued. Haven´t decided yet.
