just a short bit of fiction

Author: ohmyjonas
Pairing: Finny/Gene, tentatively set after the war. You can pick the year.
Rating: PG? There's kissing involved, but it's really just a bit of fluff.
Word Count: Approx 390.
Author’s Note: I was so happy to have found this community, and even more so when I saw that it had some good fiction posted. That said, mine surely doesn't hold a candle to any of yours but this just came to me and had to be let out. : ) Concrit is welcome, always.

Phineas

You watch him as he sleeps, all of the lines and creases gone from his face; there is no tension there, for once, and his lips are actually turned up into something reminiscent of a smile. He is like a diamond, rough and uncut - every way he turns catches the light in a different way and reveals something hidden, something new. He thinks you know him so well, and you do, but there are parts of him - the parts where the light doesn't reach because they're too far down, and it's (you're) too scared to try, that you will never, ever know.

You think back to that one (gypsy) summer, and 1942, and Devon; the way you fell, twice, the second time harder than the first in more ways than one. A conversation that will always stick in your mind ("I'll kill you if you don't shut up." "You see! Kill me! Now you know what it is! I did it because I felt like that! Now you know yourself!") presents itself once more and you think that maybe it's a good thing that you can't see those parts of him.

You don't want to break again.

Gene

You see him again in the spring, after the war, and considering that the two most important (terrible) parts of your relationship had taken place in the winter and summer, it made sense for you to finally meet in the middle. He's almost exactly like you remember him - the same smile, same eyes, same I'll-do-what-I-want attitude except he's a little more quiet and reserved than he was before. You know that that's partly (all) your fault, but you can't help but wish that the Finny you knew (before the tree and jealousy and things you can't take back) will resurface.

His lips are soft and tentative against yours, hands still against his sides like he doesn't know what to do with them. You pull him in and he finally relaxes into you, his arms coming up to wrap around your waist. As you lower him to the bed he sighs into the kiss and all you can think is (I love you and I'm sorry, and there's no hidden truth anymore) how grateful you are that you have this chance.

This time, you'll get it right.
