A month after I graduated from college, my friend and I decided to take a road trip from NYC to the south, inspired by our studies of the civil rights movement. One of the places we decided was vital to go to was St. Helena Island, South Carolina as it was the location of the first freedom school and has nurtured the totally distinct Gullah culture

I'm not sure you understand what a socially awkward nerd I am in real life. While I'd love for Hurriyah to know about her influence on me, the thought of just calling her up and telling her after these six years is paralyzingly terrifying.

I can't help it, I get it from my dad. One social cripple begat another.
