So, it being Ash Wednesday and all, I went to church at lunchtime to "get ashed".

First off, a word to the church (not my regular one, but one within an easy distance of my office): it's a pretty easy surmise that, on a Wednesday at noon, many attendees will be coming at lunch and will not have a whole lot of time. That is, I presume, why you had a Liturgy of the Word rather than a full Mass. (Every other service for the day IS a full Mass). So, realizing this, WHY did you plan a musical interlude after every reading and every prayer? There was more music than in the standard Sunday version of the LotW! I don't normally MIND church music (although I prefer traditional hymns to the stuff they do at this church), but today was not the day!

Second, I got back to the office with my oh-so-nutritious lunch from Long John Silver's (no meat today), where (in an unrelated story) I forgot to get my change so I have to go back, and my nearest co-worker looked at me and could not figure out for the life of him what I had done to my head. When I explained, he was shocked. He's never heard of such a thing. This is a guy in his late 30s.

I've always thought that everyone kind of knew that it was something (depressingly few) Catholics (still) did. I've never before encountered anyone who had never even HEARD of it.
