Cloud?

Okay, so I guess I, who, once upon a time, knew everything about computers and related technology have become a dimwitted old fuddy-duddy about it. I came into computers before USB, when having enough IRQs was still a problem, and kind of stopped following the evolving technology around the time the Pentium IV chip hit 3.06 GHz. When I bought my last desktop, I honestly only understood what I was getting in terms of memory and OS. I had no idea whether the chip configuration was any good - I just knew it was Intel and had "Quad" in the name. I figured that was enough. When I bought my laptop (on which I'm writing this post), I was buying the cheapest I could find. Now that I know how much I use it, I regret that choice, but there it is.

Tonight, I pulled the trigger and downloaded my first-ever MP3 only album. The reason I did it is because the album in question isn't available in a "hold it in your hands" format. (I LIKE "hold it in your hands," dammit!) Amazon, from which I downloaded it, offered to store it for free in its "cloud," and let me download it onto my hard drive, too, and I said, "Umm. Sure, yeah, okay, whatever."

What the hell is the "cloud," why would I want to be part of it, and, most importantly, what if, in a shocking turn of events, Amazon does a Borders and closes its virtual doors forever?
