I find myself really, really annoyed by the commercial currently running for USPS flat rate service. It features postal employees giving a town hall-style presentation about flat rate boxes, and, in it, a guy in the audience stands up and says, "But I ship different things, in ALL sizes." Oh, she usually does media mail when she sends...well, media. But she did comment that, yeah - the boxes are not sized correctly for a hard-cover book, which would seem to me to be a fairly standard size.

If I recall correctly, the biggest one is like the size of a shoebox. Unless you're shipping lead, I haven't found them to be cheaper than regular boxes.

Yeah - and they specify that, as long as your package weighs less than 70 pounds, it goes at the flat rate. I look at thos boxes and think..."What on earth could anyone fit into that box that would weigh 70 pounds?" Unless they're shipping solid gold, in which case, they might want to add insurance.
