Author's Notes: This is my first ever fic/post on a community and I'm kind of scared, ngl. I found myself wondering why there was a lack of Winn lately and decided to do something about it, and this kind of fell together in a few hours. It's not properly proofread or anything, and was typed in wordpad because word hates me, so any mistakes are my own. Please comment and tell me what you think, and thanks for reading. :3 Oh, and the title is from the song
This Is The Thing by Fink.
***
It started in the summer, or just before, Will thinks. Amongst the 'thank you' and 'congratulations' hugs after the news that they'd get a second year, Finn sauntered towards him with an awkward lopsided smile, his eyes full of joy, stuttering over his words ("I...um, thank you, Mr. Schue. I mean, this is awesome, and we all... it's really great, thank you so much.") and enveloping Will in a bear hug to finish his run-on sentence. Will is overwhelmed, unexpectedly. He laughs and feels it reverberate through their bodies, and pats Finn on the back one-handedly.
Will is trying to act the same as he does with any other hug with any other student. Finn is squeezing him tight, he's laughing, Finn might pick Will up to embarrass him because he's taller and stronger than he is. But there's intention behind this hug. Finn's head is on Will's shoulder, his eyes are squeezed tightly shut and he's holding onto Will as if Finn nearly lost him. The realisation hits him like a ton of bricks, and Will's not sure how he feels about knowing he means so much to one of his students. Finn's holding on to Will like he's never going to let go, like Will means the world to him, and Will doesn't know what to do, what to think, other than hug back and hope that none of his other students think this looks wrong or out of place, for his sake and for Finn's.
Finn pulls away, serious, and his eyes search Will's for a second, and then he smirks, embarrassed, and pats Will on the shoulder. And just like that, it's over, and Will is teaching a class again.
Will wouldn't admit it, but every time Finn patted Will on the shoulder as they passed each other in the hallways, he remembered that hug.
And part of Will is terrified by this. If he's honest with himself, he wants to hug Finn again. He's not sure what that means, what that says about him and them, not that there is a them, and not that there can be, but he knows that it's not right. He knows that touching students at all (in an innocent, friendly way, not a 'where did the bad man touch you' way) is bad, it's rule one of being a teacher, but he's never really done it intentionally, and nobody's ever said anything about it, not even other teachers. Hell, most of the club hugged him when they got the good news. But this time is different, because this time he enjoyed it. He doesn't know what that means but he knows that he shouldn't be looking forward to hugging his students. His male students. What's that about? Since when did Will Schuester enjoy warm, strong bearhugs that made him feel safe and cared for from his underaged, male students?
Will briefly wonders if it should be him making Finn feel warm and safe, since he's the older one. A part of his subconscious wonders whether Finn would be in charge in their relationship, but Will tries to ignore it. They don't have a relationship. They can't. Finn is underaged, and straight. Will is straight. They're both straight, this couldn't happen.
So that's it, Will thinks. Case closed. He's thought it through, got it out of his system. He can now accept pats on the shoulder from and not freak out like a 13-year-old girl with a schoolgirl crush, he hopes.
And it's probably for the best. He hears about it in the staff lounge, and then sees evidence of it everywhere - Finn and Rachel are dating. Against all odds, Rachel Berry snagged the quarterback. And Will isn't jealous, because that would be ridiculous. He's happy for both of them, of course, why wouldn't he be, and he puts his strange interest in their relationship down to the fact that his two stars are dating, and he has to ensure that it doesn't upset the group dynamic. When he sees Finn hugging Rachel in the corridor, that same strong secure Finn hug, Will tells himself he feels nothing and ducks into Emma's office where he can't see them.
