“I love you.”
It’s abrupt and it seems to come out of nowhere. They were kissing, not making out yet, just languidly kissing, and suddenly Finn’s saying he loves him. Will pulls back slightly and looks at him.
“What did you say?” He kind of thinks he imagined it.
“I said I love you.” Finn has that innocent half smile and it kind of makes it worse.
Will pulls back all the way. “Right.”
“What? I do.”
“It’s been a month Finn.”
“I’ve known you for longer than that.”
“And you’re seventeen. You don’t know that you love me.”
“Me? You were pretty much engaged to your wife when you were my age.”
“Yeah, and look how well that turned out.”
“…are you saying you don’t love me?” Now Finn sounded hurt. No, that’s not what he meant.
“I’m saying… it’s been four weeks.”
“Five on Tuesday.”
Will let a soft smile creep up. “Five on Tuesday and I just think that we should take it slow for now.”
Finn readjusts himself on the couch and looks at the floor. “Slow. Okay.”
Will sighed. “Finn, it’s not-“
“No, it’s fine. I get it, I… kind of just… I have to go.”
The boy grabbed his jacket and walked out. Will couldn’t think of a good excuse that would get him to stay.
Saturday passed without any contact between them. Will didn’t start panicking…
Sunday, he called to ask if Finn wanted to come over. He said he had plans…
Monday, Finn left Glee almost before the word “done” came out of his mouth. There may have been some panicking then…
Tuesday, he grabbed him and pulled him into his office after school.
“Finn, come on. I know that what I said might not have been what you wanted hear at that moment-“
“What’s the point?”
Will stopped. He stopped talking, stopped moving, maybe even stopped breathing.
“What’s the point Will? What’s the point of us being together if we don’t love each other? What’s the point of becoming equals if you still just see me as some seventeen year old who doesn’t know anything? What’s the point if-“
“Finn. Stop it!” There’s force in his voice that stops Finn in his tracks. “You are not just some boy to me. You are a wonderful person that I care a lot about. Probably more than necessary. But you are seventeen and you will go off to college and enter the work force and have a ton of new experiences after you graduate. And you’re gonna meet people and you’re gonna want to go out and experiment and… Will looked down and took a deep breath, “…if you say you love me… I’ll have to admit to myself that I love you too. And then I won’t want you to go out and have all that growing up stuff you have to do. I’ll get attached to you and it’ll hurt that much more when you go out into the real world and find someone else.”
Will looked up at Finn but the boy couldn’t respond.
“I’ve already lost one love Finn. But this… it feels more valuable than that one. So I’m just trying to protect myself. I’m sorry if you got the wrong impression. This is what I should’ve said…” Will cracked a smile. “I love you. Really truly love you. More than I should after a month,”
Finn’s smile slowly took over his face. “Five weeks.” He said leaning in closer.
“Five weeks,” and their lips came together.
