Joey is an addict.
He's addicted to the blood, he doesn't just feed, he has to have it every few hours. Rob Stefaniuk has said in many interviews that it's no mistake that the head vampire was/is a drug dealer. Sure he wrote a script about vampires in order to deal with his own mortality, but Rob's a very clever man and loves to fill his scripts with as much humor and dread as he possibly can. (anyone see Phil the Alien?He did the same script-packing there) I can spot who's read up on SUCK before reviewing it and who hasn't. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I know more about about it than most of the so called reviewers. (One guy wrote his entire review after no more than reading the bloody-disgusting page on it!) Doing a movie about rockers on drugs has been done to death and Rob knew that. He not only used vampirism to deal with growing older, but as a euphemism for the rocker drug addiction. He also is actually in a band and has actually done shitty road tours. If you look at the casting of SUCK, Moby is a character named Beef and his entire gimmick is playing with raw meat. Iggy Pop is the voice of reason who tells Joey to ditch the vampires. There's a reason these people where cast in the rolls they were. (for the musically ignorant Iggy Pop's done every drug known to man and Moby is a highly vocal Vegan)
Not having actually seen the movie I can only guess at why Joey suffers symptoms of withdrawal and "needs his fix" but for RPs sake I say that in order to cover his ass if his operation is ever raided by the police Queeny keeps himself doped to the fucking gills. Being a vampire the drug will have no effect on him but it will mess with any piss tests the police give him and keep them from finding out he's a vampire. Heroin being a highly addictive drug and Queeny full of the shit, I can only assume that when he turns someone some of the drugs addictive side effects are past along. Joey himself suspects what's going on but refuses to admit it because if he does that means the band's in danger and he'd never do anything to willfully harm the band. He put everything he had into the band, including his very soul. He'd never hurt the band in such a way.
I did convince a friend of mine to go see the world premiere of SUCK (it wasn't hard, she's a HUGE Alice Cooper fan) and she's been feeding me info and I can fill in the rest from interviews, trailer/video footage to fill in anything she's missed. Such as the 19th century portrait of Queeny he has hanging in his house which fills in a little bit of Queeny's past. Which means he's one of the original French Colonists to settle the area. (she missed that bit)
I've got a very close cousin who was addicted to heroin (another who is currently addicted to it but refuses to get help and last I heard he'd run off to Nevada) and it's still an open wound for me. I also happen to be a 10th generation alcoholic. Addiction is something I've seen first hand. Playing it out with Joey tends to ping on a nerve every once in a while and it helps me deal with my own close encounters with the crap.
I do have a fic in the works where Joey goes into full withdrawal so .... It's about a third of the way done.
