have any of you ever used a moving company when moving? i'm pricing some now, but i'm wondering if it's worth it, or if i should make my friends move me, like regular. :)
I just moved, and I used movers. With the stuff I have, including a very heavy piano, I wouldn't do it myself, and I think that's a lot of how to make the decision. Do you have tons of big or heavy stuff and are you moving far? Use a mover. If you have lots of strong, willing friends and aren't going too far, rent a truck and do it yourself. Also, one of the big expenses in moving is having them pack for you, so do it yourself. I did. Boxes are easy to come by, sometimes you can even get them free on Freecycle. I bought mine at U-Haul and Home Depot (HD has some great small heavy duty boxes that I used for my china). So far, in unpacking, I've only had two losses, both in boxes I packed, and neither of them serious tragedies. So far, so good.
Oh, I almost forgot. If you're moving locally and want load/unload help, U-Haul has a link to companies that do that, and I've had great experiences using the folks on that site. You can often get a couple of strong guys for two hours for $100 total.
We split the difference and rented a Ryder truck, and hired two guys to load it, since the proper loading of the trunk was not going to happen if we did it. We got their number from the local U Haul office.
The first time I moved to Chicago, I rented a truck and had friends and family help unload it. But the 2nd and 3rd time I hired the same moving company, and they were quite cheap. Like maybe $250. A rental truck alone is $100 if you're going to move yourself, so it was a good deal. And the guys were amazing and fast. Oh, and I think I tipped each one $30 too. Unless you have a lot of really nice friends, I would just hire professionals. It's less of a headache.
