a relaxing saturday evening

at 11PM, i decided it would be an awesome end to the day to finally take the bookcase and swap places with the tv stand, centering the tv on the far wall.

so i unload the bookcase and dust the shelves, reattach the flimsy backing (it's a target special) and go on over to the tv stand and do a test wiggle/slide.  it seems like it will go, so i go for the two foot slide to the left.  well, let's just say, it wasn't having it.

so the legs all tipped to the left, and then it collapsed.  the tv (which is the old type, tube style tv) slides, but doesn't hit the ground, the cable box hangs on for dear life atop the tv, and the dvd player falls to the floor behind the whole mess.  the two things below on the shelf (an old dvd player that didnt work and a vcr that wasn't hooked up) get smooshed but hold the collapsed beast up.  something smacked my ankle.

it made a horrible sound.

so, after the dust settled, i took stock of things.  immediately, i looked for the cats, who were all cowering on the other side of the room, not having been near it when it went.  then i unplugged and unhooked everything, and started to sort through it.

i moved the tv (which is fucking heavy), and then i worked to get the drawer of the thing out, so i could move the rest of its carcass.  once that was done, i started to triage the beast to see if it could be salvaged.  i redrilled some holes to use better screws to put the legs back on, but then made the executive decision to pitch it.  i didn't want to sit there wondering if it were secure.  so i dragged its pitiful remains out to the porch, and i will put it in the trash tomorrow.  i will also start looking for a new one.

lucky enough for me, i have my old coffee table sitting in my living room, and i know its secure, so i set that up for now.

so i plug everything back in, set it all back up (except the old dvd and vcr, which i might just pitch), and i hook up the current dvd player.  now, it wasn't looking too pretty.  pieces were broken off from the plastic casing... the tray door looked iffy.  i plugged it in, and it turned on.  then i played a dvd in it, and we were all good!  i'm thinking of writing sony a letter :D

so, now that everything is calm, i really do like where the bookcase is, and it won't bother me thinking about it anymore.  but i know that i'm gonna be hurtin tomorrow.

on a good note, i think i will start posting my story tomorrow.  i need to do some work to it (which i was gonna do tonight before everything went to hell), but i think i can get the first part up tomorrow.

what did you do on your exciting saturday night?

critters, writing, murphy's law, my bits, owwies
