Well, as it turns out, I did get sick. Blah. Some stupid nasty cold or some such. Sore throat, mostly dry cough, general ickyness.
I even left work early on Friday and didn't go in today. (It means I'm really not feeling well when I call in sick, as I absolutely hate having to make other people shift their schedules about to fill my hours.) Friday I woke up with a sore throat but had to go to work for the United Way meeting thing (I went as Nancy Drew; there were three other people in bookish costume, one of which was my co-organizer of the meeting; nobody has any sense of fun...). So I made it through the meeting (hurrah! it's over!) and then my throat was getting sorer by the hour and when I was about to cry at 11:30am (see, I also had the fantastic luck of getting my period on Thursday afternoon, and hence was in the full throes of general PMS-y ickyness in addition to an evil sore throat), so I decided to call Janice and beg to be allowed to go home early. She relieved me at noon and I wandered home (stopping at Blenders for a smoothie) to curl up in sick/PMS-y discomfort and pain. Thank goodness for tea, juice, and various DVDs and books.
I felt especially guilty calling in sick today, as it was just going to be me and Janice at the Children's Desk all day and Janice was going to do the evening shift from 12-9pm. But as I woke up with a nasty coughing fit, I decided that even if I somehow managed to persuade myself to get ready for work, people would not appreciate my coughing if I did. Really, who wants a sick person on a public service desk? So I slept a bit more and then attempted to call in sick. Except nobody answered any of the phones in the Admin Office and the voice mail wasn't picking up. So I tried called the Youth Services extension, since I know the voice mail picks up after four rings, but still no luck. Bugger. So since something seemed to be awry with the library phone system, I had to call Janice at home and tell her I wasn't going in. But I did manage to get things sorted.
Back to work tomorrow. However, I've taken myself off the Halloween!storytime, since while my regular voice is okay for speaking (although with occasional coughing fits), I can't really go higher or lower without my voice going all wavery, and having an adaptable voice is a key element of successful storytimes, particularly when one is supposed to impersonate a ghost, bat, etc. So someone else gets to wear my bat-hat and bat-wings. ;_; Bugger. Whenever I get sick, I have the worst timing.
Still, I suppose I should be glad that this is only the second time I've had to call in sick in the 13 months I've been at the library. Surely that counts for something? ... I really wanted to be bat!Laura though... :(
