Today at work, my boss took me and the intern along with her on a field trip. Field trips are always awesome! :) We went with one of the librarians and a handful of interested fellows (as in, "research fellows", not "some random dudes") to the Center for Hellenic Studies (also a Harvard institute). We got a (mediocre) tour of the library there, and my boss and I had fun (in a horrified sort of way) pointing out all the things they do wrongwrongwrong. (For instance, they glue Cutter number stickers on the spines of the rare books. This is bad because glue is evil. You do not process rare books. You place them reverently on a shelf in a climate-controlled room and maybe put one line claiming ownership on an interior page. To be fair, they did at least have the climate-controlled room.)

So, mediocre tour but it's always fun to get out of one's office for a bit, so field trips are a win however boring they are. Also, they had a book there called In the Image of the Ancestors, which made my inner fangirl giggle. ;)

(Side note: My actual work involves lots of labeling stuff with location and site names and such. SGA comes up nearly every day. There's Abydos, of course, and then there's a place in Greece called Mount Athos, and since it's mostly religious sites/art there's about a million Johns. So sometimes, whilst listening to podfics on my iPod, I pretend I'm working in a Pegasus archive and ponder what histories all these documents contain since it's all Greek to me anyway (literally! haha! most of the stuff that's got writing on is in either Greek or Latin, neither of which I ever studied). *is a dork*)

In other news, it's almost my favourite time of year!! *bounces excitedly* What, you ask, is so exciting about the end of September? Banned Books Week! September 27 to October 4! I like to live every day like it's Banned Books Day, of course, but it's so much more exciting when it's Official and I get to wax poetical about having the freedom to read what you want and pick up cool anti-censorship bookmarks from the library and tally up how many objectionable materials I've read and resolve to read lots more (but only if I want, because it's my choice). It's my very absolute favouritest time of year!! :D

freedom to read, book geek, library geek, sga: fannish, work: d.o.
