(no subject)
So I mentioned being stuck for an hour and a half on a twenty-mile stretch of desert highway in the middle of nowhere, California (okay, actually, between Pismo Beach and Santa Maria, but truly there is nothing between those two places besides huge stretches of farmland and empty fields).
The back-up was due to an accident, of course. Which resulted in both lanes of the southbound 101 being closed (on that stretch of highway with no exits). And, of course, it was caused by a drunk driver. (At 12:30pm!) It seems to have only involved the one truck, which rolled over and got smashed up quite alarmingly (we saw its remains when we finally made it that far), but there were three passengers in the car. One of whom is now dead, the others presumably in hospital.
But the driver? In jail for driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter, so apparently unscathed (or at least unscathed enough not to warrant a hospital stay). Of course, the passengers are also incredibly stupid for being in the truck with the guy, but WHY is the drunk driver NEVER hurt in these sorts of accidents? It's always the passengers and/or the people they hit who are seriously hurt or die.
