this morning i watched a program on the college channel about negative reinforcement, positive reinforcement, and punishment.. the different effects of these, and why people are more prone to do some things rather than others. how negative reinforcement is more frequently put in action, but positive reinforcement is actually more effective. how some families raise their kids in mexico with every type of positive reinforcement they can think of, and the children turn out as sweet as can be. as opposed to children that are raised with continual negative reinforcement, that keep on repeating their unacceptable behavior. punishment has shown to be quite effective, but only for certain situations. there's also discrimination in positive and negative reinforcement, as well as reinforcement stimulus. lets say a child gets scared of a collie at a very young age. does this mean the child will be inclined to be frightened by -just- the collie from then on out? no. the child will be scared of most dogs. this is the stimulus of the situation. if you compare it to a woman being intimidated by her male boss.. this doesnt mean the woman will be intimidated by all male figures.. this is the discrimination aspect.

the whole base of this particular study was set on a marine boot camp. tons of negative reinforcement, and everyone learns what their supposed to do, to avoid the negative consequences. still, the men responded more to the repercussions of positive reinforcement. they basically competed with eachother, to receive praise from their drill sergent, bragging rights among other platoons. this was all done subconciously. the men were able to look at the head of their platoon as a father figure, a teacher, and so on - again the discrimintaion is in process, because the men cant look at EVERY drill sergent the same.

i need to study people.
