The warlocks eyes snapped open as every muscle in her body tensed at once, her mismatched eyes darted back and forth and her heart pounded in her ears. Cain had been having the same nightmare for weeks now however, it wasn’t so much a nightmare as it was an unconscious representation of the presence she had been feeling. It was as if someone, something had been watching her, following her, the dream would end with the formation of two eyes more feline than human then the feeling of being completely over whelmed and afraid.
The young human tried to turn onto her side but discovered she could not move due to being completely entangled in the long elegant limbs. Cain smiled as she turned her head to face Rhyx, she had always slept so soundly probably due to the fact she worked so very hard. The elf snored softly as she unconsciously pulled the blankets off of the other two and wrapped herself into a cocoon of covers.
“The more things change, the more they stay the same.’ Cain thought stifling a giggle. Everything was finally falling into place for her, The triangle relationship between Xen, Rhyx, and Cain had dissolved which saddened the warlock in a way. However, what rose from the ashes of that experiment came a love so strong between Rhyx and Cain there was nothing that could stand between them. Once again, Cain could hear wedding bells, this time Rhyx had proposed. The human never felt so happy in all her life he envisioned the small private ceremony in her minds eye and felt nothing but joy.
She closed her eyes and once again slowly began to drift off to sleep. Until once again the feeling of overwhelming power and fear, her eyes snapped open once again, ‘damn…what is this?’ she thought looking into the darkness. Cain needed to get up and get some air clear her mind she looked back at Rhyx. Carefully she moved her hand up and tickled the elf under the chin, Rhyx grumbled and turned over burring herself under the blankets. ‘So predictable my starlight’ she thought with a small smile
The warlock quickly moved away from the bed smiling at the woman who laid there ‘I love you’ she thought as she began looking around the floor for some cloths. Cain looked around and remembered she had picked up all her cloths and put them away that afternoon. ‘Figures I picked today to clean’ she thought for a moment deciding to perform a little experiment, she slid out of her night gown and clenched her fists concentrating. The darkness around the warlock began, swirling around her, slowly it began to cling to her body and take shape, forming long flowing robes similar to her black mage weave with only slight color variation.
She picked up her staff and quietly left the tiny apartment. The shining beacon that was Stomrwind City was dark, the store windows were black and empty and the streets empty except for the occasional rat or stumbling drunk. Cain remembered how afraid she was of the city at night, how the darkness used to conjure demons in her imagination. She chuckled at how foolish she was back then, the darkness was as much a threat to her as a gentle breeze. ‘Maybe…maybe im just being paranoid’ she thought as she crossed the bridge leading to the park, ‘maybe this presence is no more than my subconscious responding to the changes that are happening within me. It made sense, the humans powers had been growing rapidly since the night with Rhyx and Xen at the park. ‘But…then again, River made a good point it could be my allergies interfering with my powers, or I’m just reacting differently to those around me.’ Although a valid point, in Cain’s mind it was a bit of a stretch, The human had never been effected this way in the past.
What also surprised Cain was how quickly River had dismissed the concept of the shadowstar, that got Cain thinking, could River be hiding something? But why? Cain then remembered that River had admitted she was rather jealous of all the attention the warlock had been getting lately. ‘But…would she really with-hold information from me…her own sister?’ Cain couldn’t believe it, she refused to believe it, she moved quickly through the tunnels bake to the canals heading toward the cathedral.
‘I have to know’ she thought as she bounded up the stairs of the church, she entered the building and was greeted by the same unsettling chill. Eyes burning holes into her, judging her for what she was, the red head moved quickly across the room with her head down and her mouth shut. Cain quickly traveled down the long spiraling ramp to Rivers workshop/home, the candles were out and the room was pitch-black, Cain pulled out her wand and charged it filling the room with an eerie green glow.
Quietly she moved to the spot on the floor where the elf slept, Cain couldn’t help but smile as she saw River laying there awkwardly sprawled out as she usually did, her hair a tangled mess. Right by the elf’s side cuddled up close was Syl, Syl reminded Cain so much of herself when she was younger. Cain crept closer making sure not to make a sound, ‘forgive me sister…you have left me no other choice.’ Cain hated probing the minds of those she cared about however, it was something she had to do in order to find the truth the others had deemed “To much” for the “Fragile” warlock. The human gently touched the elf’s head and closed her eyes focused intensely.
The physical world melted around the warlock as she slowly began to descend into Rivers mind. ‘Rhyx would freak if she ever saw me like this’ Cain mused as she watched her body begin to change. In reality, Cain hadn’t moved at all, she was still in the same spot her body unchanging, it was merely her conscious self forming into her astral form. Cain’s robe vanished and the armor of the succubus took its place, she patted her side to find a whip clipped to her hip, bat like wings began to sprout from her shoulder blades and a tail snaked out from the small of her back.
Cain “Landed” on a small gravel path, she walked down she walked for what seemed to be hours until she came across a large wooden door with River’s face carved into it. “Well, there’s no turning back now,” she said to herself as she pushed the heavy door open, she walked inside and turned to see the door quickly slam shut and disappear.
“Oh no…”
