Coming home for break felt a lot like moving back in. I left with Richard in tow during the late morning. Goggins only brought down his trustworthy bike and a couple of bags. Me? I brought down clothes to be laundered, my trusty DVX, Digital Rebel, 3 lights in a big backpack, shotgun microphone, boom pole, Mac Mini and wireless accessories, and my shit laptop plus books and notebooks.
Anyhow, I started off the morning by meeting Hanoch to hear his take on the documentary editing. I'm still completely lost about this whole thing. I've got all the important footage captured albeit with some minor issues with the capture process. He's still got this agenda on hand and it's causing a bit of friction in the approach and a lot of personal feelings about the project. I honestly don't think I would have been able to cope with this whole process had it not been for the other group members being so good at what they do.
After that messy meeting, I went to meet with Rob to get my light kit back. He's shooting a music video for his 345 final and I personally can't wait to see it even though he had a ton of issues with the shoot.
I hit Denver running so to speak once I got into town. I REALLY wanted to see some stuff at the Denver International Film Festival but I missed out due to school related stuff particularly El Laberinto del Fauno, the new film by Guillermo del Toro. Plus, there's something kind of neat to the whole premiere night and getting dressed up to meet fellow pretentious film people and eat fancy appetizers while sipping local wine. Don't forget the charming nature of holding the screenings at the somewhat ramshackle Tivoli theater. I guess there is some benefit to being the only non-corporate multiplex in this town because they hardly ever show anything first or at least anything attention grabbing to me.
Being the absolute last day of the festival, Richard and I went and saw this Czech film called Beauty in Trouble. It turned out to be complete garbage and completely uninteresting. It was like a foreign interpretation of a Lifetime movie or some American romantic drama. I was really surprised by the number of people at the screening and how genuinely excited they were to see to see the movie and the number of positive comments they seemed to lay upon it. Does being foreign automatically make the film good or even decent? I guess there's no accounting for taste in some circles.
Following that adventure I was persuaded to meet up with Will and see Asobit Seksu at the Larimer Lounge. Will's doing this project for one of his class about the indie music scene so he's gotta interview some people and needed some pictures for his presentation. He did his interviews although it looks like it'll be a pain with the number of people at the venue and the music blaring over the speakers. I managed to get a handful of decent shots but I really abhor the light setup at the Larimer Lounge because most of the time it doesn't prefer clear illumination plus Asobi Seksu did some crazy strobe lighting during their set. Overall the show was pretty good but not mind blowing. I never really heard the band before and I enjoyed what I did hear. The opening bands did go south pretty fast but a lot of them broke out some interesting instruments at least.
Midnight's the official launch of the Wii and I am so mixed about it. I had considered paying Will to go buy it for me but he didn't think he'd get one tonight anyways. I do want one because I think the controller's pretty nifty and I like the Virtual Console goals Nintendo's set forth. It's just that the GameCube was probably my least played system this past generation, I'm not so keen on the price tag given the tech specs/capabilities of the system, and I have yet to see any game which makes me think that the control scheme isn't a complete gimmick. I do see it being a great party console but I don't really have a group or crowd to warrant investment in a party machine. I know it's odd for someone to complain about a $249 game console when PS3 sits up there with a $499 and $599 SKU. I guess part of it has to be the addition of my 1080p TV and the fact that I really want HD content for it, so having a PS3 and the Blu-ray player would be an ideal component for me now but money's too tight to fathom blowing that much on a PS3.
I guess this is where I admit the TV has turned me into a graphics whore. The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem.
I imagine in a couple years I'll own all 3 systems which reminds me of why I miss the old days of gaming or at least gaming by limited means. I guess maybe then I would actually finish some of the crap still sitting on my rack like Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden Black, and The Sith Lords. Maybe this will be the winter break where I change all of that.
All in all, a typical busy day and one in which I managed to completely bork the schedule I was trying to maintain so I could get everything done. Well, you win some and you lose some. I swear to be back on track tomorrow!
