NEW YEARS FESTIVAL @ SEOUL ACADEMY
by Jang Wooyoung

The long-awaited New Years Festival @ Seoul Academy is finally here to welcome the start of a brand new year! 2012 opens with a big bang as various student groups come together to create exciting collaborations on the main stage.

Our very own fabulous fashionista Kwon Jiyong opens the event with his runway presentation of the season's latest trends, featuring co-director Kim Junsu as a guest model. The Olympiad champion wows the crowd with his sharp looks and confident walk, proving once again that brains and looks can, in fact, go hand in hand. The theme this year is "Passion", with bright, fiery numbers of orange and red sizzling up the walkway to a hip-hop beat. When Jiyong struts out to take the final bow, the screams are almost deafening.

Up next is a dance tribute to Michael Jackson by Lee Junho and yours truly. Girls and boys alike roar their approval as Junho and I take the stage, performing to hit songs like "Thriller", "Black or White" and "Smooth Criminal". Standing out amidst the throngs are the members of Seoul Academy's winning American football team, shouting and cheering with uncurbed enthusiasm.

"I didn't know Junho could dance like that," says Hwang Chansung, star DT of the football team. "Can you imagine the things he can do with that flexibility?"

"I think both of you did a great job," adds Captain Im Seulong quickly.

Nobody, however, does a better job of dance parodies than the one and only Jo Kwon, RB of the football team. The crowd goes absolutely wild the minute he appears on stage, wearing body-hugging tights and gyrating those slender hips to the rhythm of Lady Gaga's "Telephone". His performances have grown more elaborate and outrageous, beginning with a cute rendition of Justin Bieber's "Baby" to last year's parody of "Single Ladies" by Beyonce, but he never fails to entertain us each and every time.

Last, but not at all least, is the new and improved Ace of Spades. With two indie releases to their name, the band's popularity continues to soar. Not only do they boast new songs for the year, but a recent member change has introduced two new instrumentalists - second-year student Lee Seunghyun and foreign exchange student Nichkhun Horvejkul. Seunghyun provides bass and vocal accompaniment, while Nichkhun joins the band as a keyboardist. (See: "Ace of Spades: New Members")

As expected, Ace of Spades doesn't disappoint. The band easily raises the temperature of the Quad to a feverish level with their albums "Walking" and "VVIP". Lead vocalist Jung Jinwoon further sends the crowd into a frenzy when he later removes his T-shirt and flings it off the stage to grappling hands below. Witnesses state that they recall seeing Jo Kwon, still in full Lady Gaga costume, fighting off girls for the prized shirt. One can't expect less from the President of the Jung Jinwoon Fanclub.

"All that for a T-shirt," laughs Ok Taecyeon, FB of the football team. "I mean, I like Jinwoonie, but if I wanted a sweaty T-shirt, I could just smell my own right now."

Judging by the response of Taecyeon's fans, they wouldn't mind a sweaty T-shirt from him as well.

It is a pity that the football team has chosen not to participate in a group performance this year, but everyone would surely agree: the New Year Festival @ Seoul Academy is, as it always has been, a great success. To one and all, have a happy 2012!

Ace of Spades: New Members
After the member change, barely a day passed before Seunghyun and Nichkhun rapidly gained a strong following, with their fans affectionately giving the boys nicknames: 'Khun' to Nichkhun and 'Seungri' to Seunghyun.

When asked why they had chosen an entirely different name for the new bassist, Seungri's Lady (not her real name) explained, "Our Seunghyun is always so confident, so self-assured, that we think a strong name like 'Seungri' fits him best."

Today, as a celebration for the new year, the two boys have kindly agreed to a brief interview with the Daily Seoul!

---Could you give a quick self-introduction?
S: I'm Lee Seunghyun, second-year student, and the new bassist and back-up vocalist for Ace of Spades.
K: I'm Nichkhun, an exchange student, and the new keyboardist for Ace of Spades.

---How did you feel after your membership was confirmed?
S: Fantastic! I've been hoping to join a band for the longest time, so this is like a dream come true for me. My friends have always said I'm more of a talker than a singer though. Guess who proved them wrong? (laughs)
K: I wanted a place to showcase my piano skills and this was a perfect opportunity. I'm very thankful to Jinwoon for his invitation.

---Do you live on campus?
S: Nope, sorry, I live off-campus.
K: I do! I'm in the East Quad.

---Besides your band members, who are your closest friends in school?
K: I'm pretty close to the football team, I guess? Oh, and to Wooyoung, of course. (grins)

---Ahahaha, thanks. What about you, Seunghyun?
S: Jiyong-hyung. I share an apartment with him, actually.

---Rumour has it that you and Jiyong-hyung are a couple.
S: Yeah? (laughs) Where'd you get that?
K: I've heard that rumour, too. It's all over the forum.
S: You mean the fansite?
K: Yes.
S: I see, I see.

---So is it true?
S: Depends. Do you want it to be?

---Uh. Are you asking me or the fans?
S: Both. (waggles eyebrows)
K: (laughs)

---Moving on. Jinwoon looks like he takes the role of leader and moodmaker in the Ace of Spades. What are your roles?
S: I'm the charismatic one. (laughs) Just kidding; it's a little too early to say.
K: Seunghyun's right. We haven't figured out our roles yet, aside from our positions in the band.

---Of course. Then last of all, a word to your female fans?
S: We'll work hard to bring Ace of Spades to the very top. V-V-Victory to the max!
K: I hope everyone will love the new Ace of Spades. Please continue to support us.
