In school we learn about slavery, the kind that happened years ago. We learn about the victims who have been heeded, and the laws passed long ago to prevent such a historic crime against humanity. But very few of us are aware of the magnitude of the modern slave trade, in the form of the international sex industry. It's worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and is responsible for the sale of hundreds of thousands of women and children each year, in the same way as any other natural resource would be sold. Lax UN legislation, as well as the fact that the world's governmental and legal officials are complicit in this process, mean that international citizens are effectively prevented from standing up for and protecting the voiceless victims. After all, it's incredibly easy to ignore what we never see, and what is legitimized through the media's treatment of women and young girls.
