This review will be filled with almost no seriousness since I finally found my work flashdrive and jumped up and down and woohooed like I got called as the next contestant on The Price is Right.
The show starts off with candlight, angelic singing, and Merlin walking past before it cuts to why the angels are singing- Arthur washing himself shirtless and Merlin dressing him.
Joking aside, I love the atmosphere of the scene.
Merlin literally gets hit on by Gwen. Gwen doesn't understand Merlin's favorite past-time Arthur watching. Merlin probably should invite her along to watch Arthur practice with his knights and then maybe she'll understand. But then he might get jealous, so that might be a bad idea...
Conveniently, someone slipped by Merlin in the middle of the night and opened the doors to the hall. Arthur must have wondered what the rumbling sound in his vision was. Uther gives Merlin his usual glare and the force of it wakes Merlin.
Merlin eats like he a) hasn't eatten in a while because of last night, b) is planning to tag along with Arthur so he's eatting good while he can, c) is a worried fishwife, or d) has food other than mystery gruel for once.
Gaius don't get him worried while he's digesting, now he will get hiccups!
Merlin is fussing with Arthur's bed and hiccuping adorably. Arthur side eyes him. He's under the impression that all the good deeds he's done since the beginning of the series aren't enough to prove that he's worthy to the people. Maybe he means his father? Morgana can do no wrong in Uther's eyes, but Arthur always gets "Don't disappoint me."
Merlin wants to tag along, and Arthur makes a face at that idea.
Arthur, it's understandable that Merlin would thinking he'd automatically be going since you takes him along on hunting trips, bar runs, dates, rescues, and everything else. Why should a quest be any different?
Morgana shows off her lovely dress in the daylight. Morgause give her a bracelet that will make Arthur feel less naked since he can't take his crown with him. The stone looks a bit like a jolly rancher. So if he gets hungry, he has the bracelet version of a ring pop.
Gwen starts getting suspicious. Maybe now she can spy for Gaius and Merlin? I like the idea of her with more Merlin friendship scenes and solo scenes.
Arthur opens the door to find where the music is coming from. As he suspected, Gwen has been waiting for him for who knows how long. They wait for the right part in the music and share a chaste kiss. Arthur flees from the music, but Gwen bravely faces it until the end.
Before Arthur leaves, Arthur and Merlin look into each other's eyes saying all that they can't say in front of Uther. Merlin checks out Arthur's newest accessory. Merlin eyes follow as the knight goes forth on his quest leaving his love Merlin behind to worry.
I want to know what Bidge is referring to on the map and what that arrow is pointing to.
Merlin takes his time looking for a book, and it's really just a big excuse to look at his profile. Gaius tells Merlin he will need help (Thank you Gaius!).
Morgana, I'm disappointed in your craft skills. Morgause said a likeness of Arthur, not stick figure. You'd think you'd have some red scraps of fabric around, some ribbons, a few beads, and with your makeup you could make a real likeness of Arthur. Think of how much you would laugh at it before you even light the candle. Also, you need to learn to lock your door when you're being evil.
When Arthur can beat the bad guys while his life force is being sucked out of him, you know they suck. I love the stumbling weak fighting. It's like drunken master Arthur style.
Gwaine plays medieval slip and slide and brings a smile back to Merlin's face. I wish I could have a gif of the entire chase scene. Forget threesome porn, I want Arthur/Merlin/Gwaine adventure fic with them getting in and out of trouble.
This week on awesome fantasy actor crossovers, Warwick Davis appears. I like his lines, and think he steals his scenes. I'd like to think that he uses his magic to help the kingdom recover after this episode. Arthur takes his sword with him across the bridge. Maybe he's hiding some food and water under that chainmail somewhere?
Gwaine and Merlin get in some bonding. And Arthur must be frying in his armor. Meanwhile back in Camelot, Morgana asks for forgiveness and Gwen isn't buying it anymore. Go Gwen!
I'm glad Gwaine is with Merlin. The jokes are distracting him from worrying about Arthur. I bet if he was alone, he'd be pushing himself to exhaustion until he reached Arthur. It's good to have someone to look after Merlin so he doesn't do that.
But Arthur is really in trouble guys, so please hurry! Oh wait, nevermind, he's found his last reserves of badass and saved himself.
Gwaine and Merlin are taking the scenic tour of the perilous lands compared to what Arthur's gone through. No unbearable heat or quicksand. And instead of passing out from exhaustion, they share companionship and a warm fire. There are "pheasants", but they must be slashers content to watch Merlin and Gwaine from afar.
Arthur is nowhere in sight, but Merlin is still doing everything for him. Arthur better worship Merlin for the awesome friend he is when he finds out how many times Merlin has saved him. Sure, it started out as destiny, but it's much more than that now. Though if Arthur stays mad at Merlin for a while after the magic reveal, Lancelot and Gwaine will probably have words with him because they like Merlin.
Gwen goes to Gaius. While he's at it, Gaius better tell Gwen to be careful or Morgana might hurt her.
Thankfully, Arthur rolled himself over during the night to a more comfortable position.
The Dark Tower has a domed top, which sadly doesn't get explored. I'll just imagine if King Arthur and Sorcerer Merlin ever have a fight, Merlin will visit Grettir in the restored tower and they'll talk magic until he misses Arthur and returns home to find Arthur fretting and worried.
Just when Arthur sights the tower, of course wyverns have to arrive and turn his yeah! into an oh sh-t.
The wind runs its fingers through Gwaine's hair as Merlin searches the horizon for the giant "I'm Uther's son." sign on Arthur's back that enrages everything magical.
Merlin shows off those muscles that we last got to see the last time he went hunting with Arthur and his knights. You know the time in the summer when they washed off all the sweat in the river. What? Since the show doesn't have any shirtless Merlin, I have to use my imagination.
Anyway, Arthur evades the wyverns and passes out just in time for Merlin to arrive. The wyverns come from the land of good CGI. Why can't all the creatures from that land replace the bad ones in the opening sequence?
Merlin goes all Dragonlord and the wyverns leave with their heads tucked down like punished children who got caught doing something they weren't supposed to do.
Even this smile can't prevent Arthur from waking up on the wrong side of the bed. Arthur doesn't know about the bracelet and is probably feeling bad about failing passing out right as the wyverns were coming in. And Mer-lin and Gwaine show up to save him.
Merlin, expert prat handler that he is, teases him. Merlin trips a door mechanism. He then meets cool guest character#2. The lighting loves Merlin.
Gwaine calls Arthur a princess. Which reminds Arthur of how much Uther loves Morgana, and how much easier it would be on him if he were born a princess. :( Arthur naturally has to stick his hand in the bugs because the faces he makes are so priceless.
Merlin and the Fisher King conspire to make me cry. Arthur avoids hug temptation, but Gwaine has not built up that much resistance to Merlin's I need a hug eyes.
Gwaine and Merlin have a silent conversation where Gwaine seems to ask what he sees in Arthur, and Merlin replies that he has his good qualities they're just hard to see sometimes.
The wyverns must know the quest is at an end because even though Gwaine said more were coming, they don't bother them again. Or at least the episode doesn't tell us.
Gwaine really wants to go with them to Camelot. The wind calmly rustles his hair, sharing his sadness.
Arthur can't live a day without Merlin, so he won't allow him a day off.
Morgana fails again. Morgana, it's that silver dress. Trust me on this, burn it, it's jinxing you. Stripes and polkadots together are just plain evil.
Arthur could have slacked up until this point and then aced the quest because only the quest is what makes Uther realize he's the man he always hoped he would be. It's a miracle Arthur didn't turn out worse with a father like Uther.
Next time on Merlin: Gaius gets another love interest this season and she brought a pet with her. Merlin knows she's going to break Gauis' heart and is not amused.
