Is there anyone who is not affected by this event?

[Sometimes a few people are skipped, at least from what he's seen, but so far he's heard of no one but those already without powers to lose being unaffected.]

Not sure if these are up and running again yet, but... figure it's worth trying.

I'm not affected. My materia's shot, which doesn't make much sense that it's not working but the electricity's still on. But that ain't part of me. It's just a tool.

The filters have returned, yes.

Materia?

Are you able to use your own abilities, if you have some, otherwise?

Materia. It's a technological tool back from my home. So far as I've seen, ain't no other worlds have it, which might be why it's being affected.

Me, though? Nah. I'm fit as ever, though I ain't got no super human strength or augmented self-healing or anything like that. Can't fly, can't do any sort of funny magic shit. Whatever. Haven't tried wasting any bullets yet to make sure my aim's still good, but I don't think it's affected.

From everything I've seen mentioned on the feeds, plain old human is the baseline for what's going on. That means your angel boys and vampires and shinigami and Soldiers are just like the rest of us sorry saps. You ain't gonna see me advertise that, though. Last thing I want is to be noticed so I end up on someone's long list of research for test subjects or some shit.

What is it used for?

It does seem that 'human' is the level most have been reduced to. However you likely have little concern about anyone being interested in harming you for it; those here that are dangerous have little particular interest in humans.

All the same, I'd rather stay under the radar, yeah?

Materia's crystallized energy from the planet. You can use it to release that energy, like making a ball of fire appear, or even boost your speed or strength if you've got the right one. They're each pretty damn specialized, though, and most are pretty weak unless ya dedicate enough time working with them.

Some people call it magic, but that's just cause they don't know about the science behind it.

That's likely a good strategy.

[He is fascinated by this idea.]

Do you have some here, that is functional when the event is not ongoing?

A few, yeah. Just what I usually have equipped on me, and one or two extra that I managed to grab before the end of the world.

[He grins. It's an easy enough expression, but there's not much humor behind it.]

I'd show you 'em, but there's not much point right now with the way things are.

[He's interested by and understands the whole 'end of the world' thing, but he lets it go for now. He may wish to ask about it in the future but right now he's focused on the materia.]

When the event ends, I would like to see them if possible. I would offer to demonstrate something in return, but I have little left to do so with. However, I can show you a ward that may be of use to you.

That sounds fair. [Reno offers a slight nod - an acknowledgement of the trade.]

I'm guessing that whatever your ward is doesn't work now, either, huh?

It wouldn't as of now, because everyone is mortal. The warding symbol can be used to protect a location from entry by angels, and with Lucifer here, it may prove to be of use to you.

Huh. That does sound useful.

[Reno considers for a moment.] Yanno, that's the second time that someone's mentioned Lucifer specifically, as someone to look out for. What's up with the guy? Is he some sorta big bad from back home or something?

Yes. He can be dangerous when he chooses to be, though lately he has cause little harm.

However, he has no regards for individuals outside of his family, and hates humanity in general. Therefore anyone will be considered expendable if it suits him.

Hey, nice. That's my favorite type of sociopath. [He offers a wry grin. At least that was more of an explanation than he'd been given the first time that Lucifer had been mentioned.]

'ey, but- aren't you an angel, too? That means this ward thing would keep you out also, right? You okay with showing someone else something like that?

Do you have experience with them, then? [He doesn't get the comment might be in jest or just light, and is curious.

He hesitates a moment before he responds.]

I'm not an angel anymore. The ward would do nothing to me, but I would have shown you anyway. I would likely have little reason to go anywhere you might choose to ward.

[The seriousness of his first question nearly catches Reno off guard, and he makes a face. The second half of what he says is far more interesting, though.]

Man, I keep finding more an' more about angels every day, seems like. First, none of you are hotties just waiting for attention, and now you can be kept outta somewhere with wardings and can stop being one? We've seriously gotta update our dictionaries back home if all that's the case. [He grins again with the same lack of humor as before.]

I'd rather steer clear of the sociopaths, though. From my experience, the best way to handle them is to off 'em before they have a chance to do anything big. Sounds like killing someone permanently isn't an option here, though.

Angels are very unlike the popular knowledge or opinion of them, at least in my world.

Indeed, that is the main issue. Stopping someone in a way that will be permanent is very difficult when simply eliminating them isn't an option.
