Suitability: So if you’re reading this after Tsubasa’s personality section (which I recommend, because I’m going to be touching on it), you’re probably thinking “what would this silly, immature ‘nununu’ing kid have any business doing in Zodion?” And, well, from that alone, you’re probably right.
Okay, so he’s spunky and motivated and would probably go to almost any lengths to win a physical fight (especially if it were the sake of someone else; good luck making him back down if one of his friends is in danger). Hey, he could probably blow some things up with his inventions, since he seems to be so skilled with that. That’s cool! But that could happen anywhere, not just in Zodion.
But see, what I have yet to mention is that Tsubasa is pretty…. forward. So Starry☆Sky is a dating sim and Tsubasa is one of the options, yeah yeah. Some guys are slower while others are kind of pushy, but if you play your cards right, you’ll eventually hook up with one of them. Easy enough, right? But Tsubasa is pretty original in his own right. While his “style” of flirting with Tsukiko is kind of juvenile and pretty innocent (“hey, if you’re cold, come into my arms! I’ll keep you warm!”), it’s also direct in its own right since most of the guys won’t come out and hit on you like that (tsunderederederes everywhere). But you see, once the player actually begins dating Tsubasa (if that route is taken), he gets extremely clingy and touchy-feely really fast. Not over the top, but it’s still enough for the player to be taken aback. But it’s all light and fluffy and cute until he starts kissing you…. over and over and over. The fandom’s given him the nickname “kissing fiend”, as he winds up kissing you like twelve times in one night (though it doesn’t go past that). But in the marriage life drama CD (set ten years later), it’s implied that they’ve gone the whole way. Since, you know, they’re married and all. Not too unusual.
But yes, while Tsubasa’s still mentally immature in many ways and probably wouldn’t be too intent on having sexual relations, once he was actually forced to, he’d get the hang of things pretty darn quickly. Especially since his castmates are in the game, and having not only Tsukiko there but the other guys and Kazuki in particular, his jealous streak would come to the surface and he’d try to “be more like the others” as they do their grown-up things that most definitely include banging Tsukiko. And let me tell you, if they’re doing things like that, he won’t want to be left out. Oops.
Also, he’s pretty independent for a teenager, as he’s tried to live without relying too much on anyone else (the keyword is “tried”, since the student council used to be a pretty big downfall for him in this sense). Before the situation with his grandmother was resolved, Tsubasa would stay in his dorm and not return home; he’d stay there during all breaks during school, including Christmas and New Year’s (which is really rare, and it’s mentioned to him more than once). Aquarians are known for being independent, and being the representation of one, Tsubasa has it covered. He used to hole up in his room with his inventions and not talk to anyone, and even after arriving at Seigetsu High School he tried to do everything on his own. With this stubbornness, I don’t think he’d have any problem trying to live on his own; he already has the basic “buy your own food, do your own laundry, have your own place” trio down, which is often the hardest step of all. Zodion would just make things a little more complicated, that’s all!
Power: Air - Healing (potions/medicines)
Personality: Even at a distance, Tsubasa has always been one to stand out. Well, he is a representation of the astrological sign of Aquarius and shares almost all of the main Aquarian traits, after all. It’s only natural to be original!
For starters, Tsubasa stands out due to his height and appearance. He’s extremely tall for his age at a height of 6’1 and has messy, unkempt hair with clipped back bangs and an original fashion sense. He wears his own jacket as opposed to the school’s uniform and is almost never seen without a pair of stylish purple headphones around his neck. He’s a bit of a rebel in many ways, you see. But even though he’s generally quiet in large crowds and tends to silently fiddle with whatever happens to be in his hands at the time instead of paying attention to his surroundings, Tsubasa is actually extremely amiable and tends to be “the fun guy” and lively troublemaker in the student council: honest, a tiny bit airheaded at times, overly silly, light hearted, and extremely childish more often than not. He’s eccentric to the point where it’s almost a flaw and his inventiveness is easily one of his best qualities. Once he’s spoken to he’ll instantly pipe right up and offer a genuine smile in no time at all. His emotions are always at the extreme on the opposite end of the spectrum as well: he’ll hole up in his room for days if he’s lonely and bawl excessively when he’s sad. However, he can be quite clingy and surprisingly direct since he rarely thinks before he speaks, plus he’s known to make decisions and assumptions a little too quickly at times. Yes, he’s definitely an Aquarius through and through, right down to the undying curiosity and abundant intelligence (that doesn’t always appear to be there at first glance). Oh, and did I mention that he’s fond of childishly flirting with Tsukiko, the sole female student council member? Oops.
Tsubasa alone has a plethora of quirks, easily more than those of three or four other average people put together. He’s notable for his verbal tic of “nu” and various variations of it, such as “unu”, “nununu”, and “nu~n” amongst many more (we’d be here all day if I were to list them). Tsubasa tends to greatly take after his beloved grandfather and shares many of his traits, such as his distinct “nuhaha” laugh (which he used to be embarrassed of) and habit of closing his eyes when he’s happy, something he’s been working on changing lately. He’s almost always fiddling with some sort of invention…. But the only problem is that they never seem to actually work. Hey, at least give him credit for trying! They’re usually halfway successful before exploding and making a horrible mess. Perhaps the other most notable habit of Tsubasa’s is his tendency to nickname everyone he meets. He’s created nicknames for each of the 13 members of the cast and won’t hesitate to nickname someone after talking to them only once. Even though the names can be a little bit silly (Bird’s Nest-senpai and Captain Barefoot being two of the more odd ones), they really are quite endearing! Promise!
But it’s not fun and games for him all the time. Tsubasa’s slightly over the top emotions are in fact a pretty well-executed cover for his emotional instability. He holds the opinion that he’d rather be alone forever than have happiness for a while and eventually lose it all. This stems directly from his childhood, which is the root of his deep mental scars and complexes; As a child, Tsubasa’s parents divorced and subsequently abandoned him. He left to stay with his maternal grandparents and quickly formed an extremely close bond with his grandfather Eisuke, whom he idolizes to this day. Tsubasa and his grandfather often made inventions together and spent time together every day until his grandfather became bedridden with disease and eventually passed away, leaving Tsubasa with the dying wish that he take care of his grandmother. He was made fun of in school as a child, something that affected him all the way into his teenage years. Tsubasa and his cousin Azusa played together during their elementary school years but slowly drifted apart during junior high school because Tsubasa was with his grandmother. However, after arriving at Seigetsu High School he met Azusa again by chance. In reality, Tsubasa didn’t have many friends at all aside from Azusa, as he isolated himself because he feared being abandoned by them. Even his relationship with his grandmother was strained; in his eyes, he felt as if she didn’t care about him and sent him off to boarding school because she didn’t want to take care of him, and as such he was afraid of returning home and seeing her. But when she fell ill while Tsubasa was at school, he fell into a deep depression and only Tsukiko, the secretary of the student council, was able to pull him out of it and force him to go and make up with his grandmother, who, as it turns out, really loved him after all.
During the entrance ceremony of Tsubasa’s first day at Seigetsu High School, Kazuki Shiranui appointed him as (or, more accurately, demanded him to be) the student council’s treasurer and he was subsequently dragged into the position without having any say in the matter. He tends to not do much work (like Kazuki) and instead uses the student council (budget-I mean) room as a place to work on his inventions, so much so that the other members eventually broke down and made him his own laboratory there. Explosions seem to be a daily occurrence, and it’s wise to not ask too much about the smoke that sometimes spills from Tsubasa’s laboratory door. But though he was originally hesitant to join, being in the student council affected Tsubasa so much that he felt as if he had become too attached and once quit without any warning because he didn’t want everyone’s happiness to end. However, with gentle words and a push forward from Tsukiko, Kazuki, and Hayato, he learned to be honest and realized that he is an important person to them after all. Between this incident and the one with his grandmother, he’s slowly but surely opened up from his silent shell and is now able to show his true personality to everyone around him, strangers or not. He’s finally begun to make friends for the first time and open up to the rest of the world without hesitation. With a fresh outlook on life and a new philosophy to rely on himself rather than Kazuki and the others, his outward personality now matches the one inside: the cheerful, overflowing with energy, invention-happy Tsubasa!
