This was my 3rd time up for Chief. Have you put in your package yet? I don't think I'm going to. My record is up to date, so I really don't have anything to add. Plus, I'm not caring as much right now. Last two years previous, only 10 and 15 Steelworker Chiefs were advanced, reserve wide. Those are pretty terrible numbers. I just got a whole boat load of extra responsibility handed to me from the battalion level too, which sucks. By the way, I haven't announced it yet on my blog, but we're going back mid next year.
Job specialization is what ultimately got me laid off. They pigeon-hole you in a very specific job, then if that job becomes slow or obsolete, so do you. Be careful, and learn more on your own, if you have to, but make sure that they see you learning more. That way, they'll be more inclined to keep you, should that happen to you. I didn't take enough initiative. So, there were other factors, but while the stated reason for my lay off was the slow economy and no construction, it was my lack of motivation to learn and explore my job that got me laid off.
