If everything goes alright, I'll be the very first "penpal of the week" at http://wevegotpaper.blogspot.com/ by tomorrow. Don't forget to check it out.
Hi! I saw your post over there (how I ended up here =P) and you sound really awesome! I'm in the comm penpals, my post about me is a little less than halfway down the page, if you want to check it out, maybe we could be pals! =)
A touch of info about me for starters though, I'm 27, American, about to be married, to my Dutch fiancé, and we will be living in Belgium for the foreseeable future. I used to penpal when I was younger but have not for many years now, and am looking to make some lovely friends! =) Please let me know if you think you'd like to write with me. =)
I just noticed you're on the ppu forum as well, hurray! Sorry for not replying back then, but I was kind of busy with thesis and exams and traveling so it wasn't a great time for me to get new penpals. How's it going in Antwerp? If I've read it right on the forum you're already living there? I hope it's not too hard for you. Do you know any Dutch yet? If not, do you plan on taking a course? How did you get yourself a Dutch fiancé? :)
haha, I am indeed on PPU, wound up there from seeing the posts by "wevegotpaper" (I know I've seen her real name but I can't recall it at the moment! lol) and following her blog, and seeing her post about it. =P

I'm glad to hear that you like living in Antwerp and I'm quite surprised you prefer it to the States :). I've never been in the USA, but at some point in my life I'd like to visit it. It's a pity that you couldn't take the class, but you'll have another chance in January indeed. I'm sure you'll do great and indeed, your husband can help you :). Congratulations on your wedding by the way! It sounds like such a romantic story =) Can I ask why you came to Belgium & not the Netherlands?
Where in the US would you like to go? I've been around over half the country, we always took trips, every school vacation from kindergarten through high school, we would go somewhere. I could offer a wealth of information if you do go and want to plan your trip! hehe.
Thanks. =D The NL has ridiculous immigration laws, and Belgium doesn't. And, he always liked Belgium and sort of kept it in the back of his mind as a place he might want to go someday, but kind of never really figured he would, you know? But then we found out the NL has laws that break EU law, and it became reality! haha. I think for the most part I, and we, are happier here than we would have been in the NL, too. Subtle differences, but for the most part, positive. Except AH To Go, mannnnnn I miss those kaas-kruiden croissants, I get 2 every time we go to/through the NL!! lmao.
It surprises me because here in Belgium people usually consider the USA as a big deal, a wonderful place. Besides criticizing their politics and social security system of course, but, then again, since Obama I haven't heard such strong criticisms anymore. I don't have any concrete plans yet, don't worry, it's just something I would like to do sometime, I'm not in a hurry. I'd probably visit the classics then ;). I'm happy you like it here, if the kaas-kruiden croissants are all you really miss, then it's really not that bad here ;)
Yeah the US is "big news" everywhere, and there are good things about it, but the gov't is taking over more and more, trying to do unconstitutional things and slowly remove all the things that make it more "free" than elsewhere, while places like the NL are much more liberal/progressive (even though it's essentially always been that way, heh)... Honestly, I don't think the US, in term of gov't/freedoms etc, is really what it is cracked up to be, not anymore. It used to be that way, back in the time of my grandparents generation and before, but it has slowly been changing more and more. I think for the most part, any of the more modern European countries are really not much different, and most of what is, is better (healthcare, schooling, eating better, etc), the rest is just trivial lifestyle differences
