The thumping of feet was heard all over the house just before a door was slammed open and a body cannon-balled onto the bed in between Kangin and Leeteuk. "Umma! The beach! Are we going to the beach?" Kangin growled dangerously at the rude awakening and the poor 10 year old straddling him jumped aside, frightened. Leeteuk sent a sleepy glare at her husband and gestured for Sungmin to come towards her. "Don't listen to your appa, okay? we are going to the beach but Minnie, it's too early. It's only 7 in the morning. Why don't you wake up your Hankyung oppa to start breakfast and then wake up everyone else to so they can get ready, too." Sungmin nodded cutely, her pigtails bouncing as she ran out of the room. Not even a minute later, a ball of black hair came hurdling onto the bed. "Umma, good morning!" Kangin reluctantly loosened his grip on sleep and rolled over pouting at Donghae. "Yah! Donghae-ah, go away. Teukie's mine." Leeteuk giggled and patted Donghae on the head. "hae-ah, Appa's grumpy. go get ready okay?"
Breakfast was what other people would call a hurricane. Heechul came down with her face mask on, mumbling through her cell phone. Leeteuk handed her the plate of oatmeal she requested, knowing full well her first-born was . . . special in ways she wouldn't want to understand. "Umma, breakfast." Hankyung handed Leeteuk a bowl speaking in stilted Korean. Leeteuk shoveled food onto the other children's plates, reminiscing the day she found Hankyung on the street, not able to speak a single word of Korean yet able to cook the most delicious dishes she'd ever tasted. Kangin came downstairs with Kyuhyun and Kibum hanging on each of his arms and Ryeowook following close behind, making sure neither of the two magnaes fell. Leeteuk shot Kangin a dimpled smile, knowing full well that Kangin was like a roasted marshmallow. Crispy on the outside and warm on the inside. Once at the bottom of the stairs, the two unlatched themselves and jumped into chairs, talking about something along the lines of quantum physics.
The dishes piled up high on the counter as Leeteuk collected them from each of the children, wiping mouths and giving instructions as she went. Yells of "Where's my swimming trunks?" and "Umma! Donghae's bada peed on my towel!" filled the air while kangin ran this way and that, gathering up a huge picnic basket, filling it with snacks, napkins and the occasional roast chicken. Leeteuk proceeded to drag the three youngest upstairs to change, especially watching Yesung tell them that if they wore their long pants under their swimming trunks, they would keep out the sea monkeys. Eunhyuk must've caught whiff of it because he, being the ever-gullible one, insisted he wear his suit like that until Donghae reminded him he needed no protection because he himself was a monkey. "Kyuhyun, where is your swimming trunks?" He looked at Kyuhyun but heard the answer from Kibum, who was next to him. "they're in his top left drawer under the floral underpants that uncle Yoochun bought him from Hawaii, right Kyu?" "Yep, and Kibum's are in his middle drawer next to the picture of Changmin that he tries to hide from Umma, right Bummie?" Kibum blushed and draped an arm over Kyuhyun's shoulder to cover his mouth. Leeteuk was basking in the cuteness of kyuhyun's lisp (he'd just lost his first tooth) and Kibum's blush (that was emanating quite a lot of heat by the way) when Ryeowook came walking in already dressed. "I'm done, Umma!" Leeteuk smiled. She never had to worry about Wookie. Peace was never long lasting in this house when there was a loud yelling downstairs and who Leeteuk presumed was Sungmin, burst into tears. "Ryeowook - " "10/4 Umma!" Ryeowook made a salute sign while giving the other two their swimming trunks and lecturing them about being respectful to Umma as Leeteuk laughed his way down the stairs.
The sight that she came across was one that wasn't expected. Sungmin was crossing her arms defiantly with tears threatening to fall. Kangin was standing over the bunny-clad girl telling her to get dressed. "What's wrong, Yeobo?" "I asked Sungmin to go get dressed but she refused to listen. When I asked her why, she refused to tell me." Leeteuk knelt down next to the girl, smoothing out her strawberry blond hair. "Why didn't you listen to Appa? Didn't we raise you to listen to your elders?" Sungmin nodded eagerly. "but Umma told me this morning not to listen to Appa. I was just listening to what you said." Leeteuk smiled sheepishly at Kangin who glowered back. "Go change now minnie." Heechul sauntered down the stairs with round sunglasses and a white sun dress on, making poses all the way down, only to be interrupted as Shindong stampeded past her. "Dammit tubby! Watch where you're going!" "Chul-ah, watch your language!"
Finally in the van, all the children managed to fit in the three rows of seats. It was half an hour away yet, 10 minutes later, Leeteuk was starting to regret the decision already."Umma, are we there yet?" "Umma, I'm hungry" "Umma can you hand me -" "shush, all of you, we aren't there yet, Shindong, we just ate and Heechul i won't hand you your comb!" The rest of the trip was filled by chatter of irrelevant things. "Do you think that lion really died?" "after you soak the rice and steam it, put in a cup of chocolate chips" "isn't cancer's cure just reversing the disease's biological structure to throw out the infected D.N.A?" "What's the purpose of life?"
the arrival to the beach couldn't have come too soon. Leeteuk leaned against the van, inspecting each child for sunscreen. "Eunhyuk! Hurry! If we don't hurry and make the sand receptor, the aliens won't talk to me anymore!" Watching Donghae drag Eunhyuk off, Leeteuk wondered where he went wrong with that child. "yah, Chul-ah, even if you're here to tan, you could get skin cancer!" "I'll be fine, Umma!" Hankyung was about to follow her when he came back and dragged Siwon off as a second thought. Leeteuk always wondered why two 15 year olds would voluntarily hang out with a 7 year old, but she wasn't one to go into their personal affairs.
After setting up a nice spot in the middle of the beach and putting up a multicolored umbrella, the children, in ones and twos, left to do what they did best: cause trouble. Slumping down onto the zebra print towel (also a present from Yoochun) she started to dab sunscreen by the bottles on herself. "Enjoying yourself?" A sandy kangin plopped down beside her taking a bite out of a sandwich that she was about to unwrap. "hey!" A mop of black hair popped into Leeteuk's line of vision. "You call me, Umma?" Donghae sat smiling with his legs crossed in front of leeteuk as if appearing out of no where. "Uh, now, dear, you can go play." Donghae's eyes went wide. "Oh no, I came to your call but I left hyukkie in the plain of shelled aliens!" With a blink of her eyes, Donghae was gone again. "Did you see that, Yeobo?" "see what?"
Once Donghae came running back to Eunhyuk, they resumed collecting the hermit crabs that were crawling in and out of the rocky cliffs. Nearby, Shindong sat with Sungmin, who was trying desperately to save her bunny sculpture from the in coming tide. "Oppa! Help me!" "just let it go, min, eventually the water will get to it and it's not like you can take it home." "Good idea!" Just then, a Frisbee came hurtling towards them and knocked shindong over. Kibum and Kyuhyun came running by to pick it up, muttering about accidental force and slight miscalculations. "the Frisbee was hit by obstruction of wind and about .35 meters." shindong clutched at his head with Sungmin patting him saying "it doesn't hurt it doesn't hurt. Be a man." while shindong yelled at the two. "just because it was an accident doesn't mean it doesn't hurt!" Sungmin pulled Shindong towards Leeteuk's direction while the other two shrugged and went back to throwing their frisbee accompanied by the quadratic formula chant.
Imagine Leeteuk's surprise when a loud wail assaulted his ears and the image of Shindong draped over Sungmin's shoulders with what looked like a weird pile of sand following them came through the crowd. "Umma! umma! Shindong oppa's hurt!" Hearing the words, Leeteuk jumped up and ran to where they were. "Right there Umma! there!" Sungmin pointed at the obvious bump forming nicely on the side of Shindong's forehead. Leeteuk pulled the teenager towards her before he coudl say another word about it. "Let Umma make it better." She rummaged through the bag she brought along and pulled out a bottle of rubbing alcohol. Shindong's eyes widened and pulled away quickly. "uh. it doesn't hurt anymore. C'mon Sungmin." grabbing her hand, they were gone before Leeteuk could say a word. "Uh, okay."
"Hyung, are you sure this is okay?" "don't worry so much, Wookie. Has Hyung ever done you wrong?" "well - " "anyways, just keep trying." Yesung had, upon Kibum and Kyuhyun's request, (they blackmailed him) decided to teach Ryeowook how to swim (Distract him while Kibum and Kyuhyun made their get away). But he pondered how he would do that while Ryeowook was kicking around in a foot of water, trying to float. . . sitting on a blow up raft. Sparing the magnae another glance, he found the smaller boy floating out to sea, unknowingly. Heck, he was still kicking without realizing he probably had a lot more than a foot of water beneath him. "Ryeowook!!" jumping in immediately, he felt the sensation of panic pass through his body as he paddled himself out there as quickly as he could. "Wook-ah!" "oh, hey hyung! Swimming isn't so bad after all!" Yesung pointed towards the shore which was almost 100 feet behind them and was getting farther away.
Half an hour later, Leeteuk found herself at lifeguard's office staring at two very cold, wet children. "please keep a better watch on your children, ma'am" Upon seeing his Umma, Ryeowook was attached to her waist the whole walk back. "I'm never going swimming again!" He shot unhappy glares towards Yesung who stared back guiltily. kangin joined them under the umbrella shortly after since he was a lot better at discipline than Leeteuk ever was. "What were you thinking?" Yesung had the most downtrodden look on his face and nodded, ashamed. his eyes started to sting with tears at the punishment he was about to get. "Appa, I was just trying to teach him how to swim." Kangin smiled goofily and patted his head. "Well, don't do it again." (so much for discipline). "Appa, how do you make someone forgive you?' It was obvious he was talking about Ryeowook so Kangin slipped Yesung some money. "you take them out for ice cream"
Looking at his watch, Leeteuk noted it was 2 in the afternoon and doing the math in his head, he also noted that the first few people will be arriving for lunch soon. "umma!" Leeteuk swiveled around to find Eunhyuk and Donghae, sandy as they may be, with 3 buckets of what looked like fish, hermit crabs and . . a squid? "I'm hungry, Umma!" "where'd you get all the fish?" "we caught them!" Eunhyuk smiled proudly while Donghae stared at the fish sadly. "poor fishies. . . " "what bait did you use, Hyukkie?" " . . . Donghae" Leeteuk's eyes widened. "Hyukjae! you are not allowed, under any circumstances, to use your hyung as fishing bait no matter how successful it is!" Eunhyuk nodded and opened their picnic basket for the roast chicken. Within seconds, all 11 children and Kangin were crowding around the umbrella, stuffing their faces with food. "Yeobo, I haven't seen you all day, what were you doing?" "I played football with a group of other guys." Kangin pointed towards a crowd of women in their smallest bikinis. "Guys, huh?" Kangin smiled sheepishly back. "well there were guys until the girls started coming over." "ooooh!Appa's in trouble." Kangin gave Shindong a whack on the head before handing Siwon his coke. "Hannie, what did you do today?" Hankyung looked at Leeteuk and pulled his biggest innocent face on. "Umma, I don't know what you said." Leeteuk was used to this behavior and laughed while a plan formed in her head. "Well, if it's you, Hannie, I trust you. you know you're responsible and you'd want to get away from your Umma now." Leeteuk turned away pretending to cry. "Umma! Umma! I'm sorry. I'll tell you. I'll tell you. I was with Siwon and Heechul nuna in this underwater cave thing and we found cool stuff but we were saving it to surprise you on your birthday next week-" Heechul blushed and smacked Hankyung on the head. "Good going" Leeteuk smiled while everyone else smirked. That trick never fails.
After lunch, no one felt like doing anything and they all lazed around on the sand around their spot, doing something or another. Kibum and Kyuhyun were effortlessly building the most coordinated sand castle ever made by 7 year olds as an apology to Ryeowook for ditching him. Shindong was working on his tan and catching up on his sleep while Sungmin stuck pieces of shells and sea stars on him, ensuring that by the time they leave, there will be a star shaped piece of skin on his forehead. Hankyung and Heechul disappeared shortly after lunch, this time leaving Siwon behind to amuse Leeteuk. The boy was having a blast just rambling about how Hankyung, Heechul and everyone else was wonderful while leaning precariously too close to Leeteuk for Kangin's taste. "yah! siwon, why don't you go and help Eunhyuk and Donghae with their . . uh alien base? We're leaving soon in a couple of hours." Siwon gave a dimpled smile (obvious inherited from Leeteuk) and nodded before bounding off screaming "Hyung!!"
Leeteuk looked behind her to spare kangin a grin. "Come here, you" Kangin shot a guilty look in return. "is it a crime to want to spend some quality time with my favorite person in the world?" "but still, if you keep glaring at the children, they'll think you don't like them. Do you really want them to turn out like Heechul?" kangin visibly shuddered. "but I'm jealous!" "goodness gracious, of our own children?" Kangins lipped on a grin before encircling an arm around Leeteuk's waist, the free hand coming up to brush stray strands from his wife's face. Leeteuk relished in moments like these. Not that the time with her children isn't cherished but sometimes it's better to let the sweet aroma of her husband take her to a world she rarely escapes to. She could feel his breath on her face as her eyes slipped shit. each kiss was like a first, discovering those wondrous feelings all over again. "Ew! Umma and Appa are kissing!" Eunhyuk laughed as Donghae gagged. "But Hyukkie, don't girls have cooties?"
Kangin and Leeteuk untangled themselves from each other, blushing furiously. Leeteuk noted that maybe it was better not to escape to that rare world in public, if it meant they'd come back to reality like this. "Uh, well, you'll learn later that girls lose their cooties when they get older and when you find a girl that you feel butterflies in the stomach for or makes your heart beat faster, you end up kissing." Sungmin piped up. "Like sleeping beauty?" "yes, kind of like that in your case, Sungmin." Donghae stood there making a face that scrunched up his eyebrows and wrinkled his nose until he looked like his face imploded. Kangin rolled his eyes. "What are you confused about, hae?" "I've felt those feelings before but afterwards, I puked." Leeteuk laughed and pulled Donghae closer to her. "well your Appa means that when you find someone you like and they like you back, you kiss them." Kangin sputtered for a moment. "Now wait just a darn minute, Teukie. Don't tell them all this now! They're barely out of diapers!" "Well, one day they'll all go out into the world and date other people." "Oh no they're not. Not if i can help it. Anyone kissing my children will have to go through me first." Siwon pouted cutely, making a fishie face. "Does umma count?" The group of children surrounded Leeteuk and planted kisses all over her face at once. "no, umma doesn't count. i meant other people and on the lips!" Leeteuk cut in. "you can only kiss people on the lips when you grow up unless it's to me or your Appa because kissing on the lips is what grown ups do. " Kangin nodded eagerly "and you boys are not dating till you're 15 and my beautiful daughters are not dating or kissing until they're 30" Shindong pointed over to the lifeguard house. "you mean kissing like that, Appa?"
Kangin glanced over and nodded. "exactly, what heechul and that life guard are doing is exactly what I don't want you all to-" Kangin spun around in time to see Heechul pin down the speedo-clad guy and pull them both into the office. Leeteuk thought, as she restrained a pissed off kangin as the children ran over for a better look, that this was the perfect ending to their day at the beach. . . or not.
"HEECHUL!"
