It's been a painfuly long three years since Nickel Creek's last album. Mutual Admiration Society was wonderful, but really just a tease. So, I was ecstatic to discover "Why Should The Fire Die?" was coming... And after listening to it, pretty much non-stop, I must say it's their best work yet. Sooooo good. Aur-gasmic, even. I was hoping they would rock out more, and they certainly did not disappoint. They can't even remotely be categorized as "country" anymore (not that they should have been in the first place). At this point, I think they've pretty much transcended any genre one could try to cram their style into, which is what I love most about them.
ANYhoot. The best, best, BEST aspect of this album, by far, is that every single song on it is a sad, bitter break-up song. How perfect is that?? It makes me soooo happy! My favorite band delivered the exact kind of music I've been craving for months in a pretty little package. The title track is the most poignant of all...
why should the fire die?
my mom and dad kept theirs alive
it's early yet, don't say goodnight
I know you're tired, you'll be alright
you're shining still behind the clouds
saying I won't figure you out
it might be true, but let me try
and try and try for the rest of my life
I'm not scared of being alone
I'm just happier being confused
beside the fire as long as it's with you
why should the fire die?
my mom and dad kept theirs alive
it's getting late, she says goodnight
and falls asleep, I'll be alright
And "Anthony" feels appropriate too...
Anthony, Anthony
oh he said he can't love me
but I think he can
yes I think he can
and I told him that just before he ran
and he's not coming back
he's not looking back
'cause he doesn't want anything I have
or anything I am
Then there's my favorite, "Somebody More Like You." It's kind of empowering in that sometimes I just want to yell some of the words in his face.
I didn't hear you say you're sorry
the fault must be mine
I wish you all the best of luck at
finding somebody more like you
you said you'd love me always truly
I must have changed
'cause you don't need me like you used to
I hope you find somebody more like you
I hope you finally find someone, someone that you trust
and give [her] everything
I hope you meet someone more your height so you can see eye to eye
with someone as small as you
you came out of nowhere and made me smile then tore me in two
saying "we're very different people," so dear
I hope you find somebody more like you
I hope you find somebody more like you
I also find it interesting that this is the only song on the album written and sung (sang?) by Sean Watkins, the guitarist, alone... which I didn't realize until after I'd decided it was my favorite. My favorite songs on "This Side" are his, and his solo album is one of my favorite CDs. I must admit I have a little celebrity crush on him and fantasize about meeting romantically and living happily ever after, based solely on his impressive musical talents, songwriting skills, and dashing good looks. It's like he wrote this one for me : ) Ah, rock stars... Aaaah, Nickel Creek. I can rest now.
