The Perfect Friend

Jun 11, 2004 20:53

I won't be exaggerrating when i say that since I left Media Centre on the last Friday of February, I have not looked at the newspaper vacancy section more than once - and even then I wasn't interested.

I love my job. I really do. And as time goes by, and I meet more people and I see their appreciation, I love it even more.

There are obviously the backstabbers, just as in every other profession. Take Yisell as an example... she was the one in class who begged me to give them more writing to do. Then she complained in her end-of-stay questionnaire that we should have had more reading and listening.

Things like that are more than compensated for when a Starter student gives you a letter of appreciation on her last day, almost perfectly worded... when you know she's probably spent days painstakingly composing it.

A simple walk around the school brings forth the realization of friendship. There are so many people out there who could make perfect friends, yet relationships are limited because of the language barrier.

Apart from that, in spite of all the joy the job brings, it really is a cruel profession. Students come here for anything between 2 weeks or 3 months or 1 year... and they always leave, as foreigners do. Yet no matter how many come and go, it's never any easier.

Imagine having to change working environment every single Monday - imagine having to change your place of work every single Monday. Imagine making a friend and losing him or her a few short weeks later.

That is what it feels like sometimes. And I cannot explain it. Because it is not that I have feelings of any unfaithful nature. It is only that I see these people come and go, knowing that in 99% of the cases I will never lay eyes on them again, even though they might have been, in some other life and time, the perfect friend.

For a person who stays away from change like the plague, I sure chose a versatile profession. Or perhaps the profession choose me...?

This was dedicated especially to Sayaka, Daniela, Fiona, Alice, Mayuko, Tolga and Ramazan

Last night we had a Karaoke night. I didn't get photos of that tho. But it was such fun. And the best part was when Stef joined. My students adored him. I think meeting him gave them a sense of comfort, so to speak. They now know one of my loved ones, so they know me better.

And he seemed to enjoy it too. I was thrilled that he did. So thrilled I could show him off :)

He's my perfect friend. And he's here to stay.
