Some thoughts on my NFE fic

And now for some thoughts. I guess I should put a spoiler warning here? SPOILERS AHOY. Ok, we're good.

It all just seems way too inconvenient, really. Like, I'd almost want to say that it was set up to impress Puzzle - "oh, look what you found, why don't we..." - except Shift clearly regards Puzzle as too stupid to think for himself and wouldn't bother putting any effort into it.

It would be pretty hilarious if the skin WAS a complete accident, albeit in a different way. Like, the Calormenes are getting ready for their final phase which, I guess uses a lion skin as symbolism? And then whooooops, dropped into the river, chase after it, you fool and suddenly this donkey is pulling out of the whirlpool by his teeth. And Shift is much too shrewd to just give up the lion skin - he figures it out as soon as the Calormenes "merchants" approach that this skin is valuable to him and he wants information. And then goes overboard in acting upon it, claiming to be a great prophet of Tashlan and the Calormenes decide that he's annoying but they may as well use him and just run with it.

Idk, just pulling this out of thin air. Don't even know if it makes sense.

OH OH OH. That would really fit, because the Calormenes HAD been planning everything for quite some time, and then Shift just shows up--at least, that's what I seem to remember.

Hmm.

And was Tirian living in the woods to get away from the Tash-happy court? Because he wanted to restore the Narnia of old with the true worship of Aslan? Or what?

Yeah, it always seemed weird to me that the beginning is so coincidental and then it changes tracks halfway through as if Shift had been planning things with the Calormenes for a long time. But something like this - with Shift merely learning of their plot by accident and then blackmailing them into helping him out in exchange for his cooperation - actually makes so much sense.

And I was almost thinking the opposite of his motivations? Like, he is very much in favour of the Tashlan movement?

I always thought the first three chapters were weird, too!

Hmmm. But then, why IS he living out in the woods?
