I get excited about stuff like this

As the year has been progressing (I mean school year, since twelve days doesn't contain much progression) I have been becoming more and more excited by the idea of social media and all its uses. Now, there's the obvious use of using this media to connect with one's social life, but what really fascinates me are the Fads, and the Marketing. The best thing is, these two categories even overlap.

I'm not going to go into this in depth, because I could go on for ages about this, but simply put, the fads are, basically, the internet memes. You know, the sudden explosion of interest all over the internet about one particular topic. But what is really cool about this is how it seems to be affecting not only the view count on Youtube channels and individual blogs and news articles, but also an interest in stuff IRL. For example, books. A lot of book marketing is already through word of mouth - the internet just spreads that word of mouth easier than before. This is not to say that "book fads" did not happen before the internet; I am just super interested in the way the internet provides such easy access to, well, fangroups and information sites and the rest.

And you can see immediately how well the Fads play into the Marketing. I've been learning a lot over the last little while about how the best social media is not just using a twitter account to tell people about your product, but rather to create relationships and receive feedback from consumers. The Fads can be used as a new sort of advertisement - youtube videos or blogs or individual, interesting websites.

Now I mention this because, as a writer, I have a habit of turning a bunch of my ideas into interesting plotbunnies. And I can't help thinking about how the world, and it's connection through and with the internet, is going to change as time goes on. Even in a few years, things will be so much different than they are now (like facebook instead of myspace, and that sort of thing). But what about in a century? Or two? Three? Another millenium?

I'll have moments where I wonder what it would be like if there was a site like Youtube that practically ran the world. (Hey, like Extras!) Or if books were written in the forms of blogs, one chapter posted a day - maybe people would have to subscribe to the site to read the book. If school was simply a series of interactive videos to watch each day, or there was a sudden internet crash in a time when every person was dependent, or...

Plus, I think I'm just super interested in how a kid can make videos in his basement and become an internet star overnight. Like, how cool, right? Just think of the things that can happen!
