Ready or not

It might as well happen this way. We would have endlessly deliberated: "Should we? Shouldn't we?" I had been holding onto a few things "just in case." A few favorite outfits I hadn't the heart to throw out. The tub he has outgrown. The jumperoo he considered beneath him, as such trivial entertainment was better saved for babies who were content with mindless activity.

And while I confess for a while I succumbed to the idyllic imaginings of two little ones playing contentedly together, sharing the duties of making breakfast on Mother's Day, excitedly running to the plate of half-eaten cookies on Xmas morning, I realized these visions for what they were: pure romance.

After all, I was mapping out my next career steps, aiming for a second degree in graphic design that would nicely buttress my soon-to-be-acquired masters in journalism. I had my sights set on bolstering my portfolio w/freelance articles penned for an assortment of cerebral parenting & lifestyle magazines, once I quit my job as editor. Quitting my full-time job meant the freedom to take Zach to swim classes, play dates, nature walks, in between my classes & writing.

Plans. I had them.

I hope it's another boy. That would be fun.
