Grantaire was loyal to a fault; it may have been his only virtue, his encompassing ability to trust, love, and form friendships, for friendships were all that were of consequence to him.
In regards to his unwavering loyalty to Enjolras, a man who seemed to-- or did indeed-- hate him, well, he had no answer. His fanatical devotion to the boy was not based in logic or mental affairs, but the attraction of personality. He was drawn to that which was the opposite of him; and then to the boy so very well hidden and nigh forgotten under the revolutionary leader.
Now, Grantaire may have had opinions and even agreed with Enjolras' once upon a time; it was as likely as the idea of Enjolras harboring some secret, a long-forgotten vice, something to influence his ideas. But it seemed almost immaterial to Grantaire, as now his world began and ended at Enjolras' feet. Was it love? Yes, of a sort. Unhealthy, uneven, complete devotion, and it was what drove Grantaire to forget his senses and do insane things like stepping in front of firing squads. That drove Grantaire to do anything Enjolras asked of him, anything he could to gain favour, even if he consistently ultimately failed.
The root and truth of the matter was, where Enjolras came in, Grantaire had not a lick of sense in his head. His love burned too bright, too passionate, and he would rile the boy up only to roll over and show his belly to whatever attack occurred. One day, perhaps, if he had survived the barricades, he would have moved on to someone more forgiving, more kind, but he hadn't the chance. And had he not died hand in hand with his god, his Apollo, then in all likelihood he would have met his end in the bottom of a bottle, mourning those upon who he hinged his life; his friends. Had the revolution never happened, had Enjolras fallen ill or into the hands of the police on that fateful day, then perhaps he would have survived. But he did not. Grantaire ended his life absurdly young, alongside his younger god, in a pool of blood. And it was impossible for it to have been any different.
