So, I have to admit, I'm pretty happy today. Ye old FedEx guy brought my box from Asian Food Grocer today, and it made me squee. Twenty packages of shirataki noodles, a big bottle of fish sauce, and three free pairs of gorgeous chopsticks I got as part of a Black Friday deal. They also included a Japanese energy drink called Dragon Pearl. I looked at the back, and it's likely to kill me, since it included Blueberry juice. Still, the bottle looks intriguing. I'll probably pass it on to my brother.
I am far more excited about the noodles. If you've never dabbled in the gluten free noodle world, you pretty much have three choices:
1. Rice Noodles/Pasta - Up side? Gluten Free. Down side? Expensive, super high in calories and carbs. 200 calories for a serving. Also, they have a taste you have to get used to.
2. Corn Pasta - Up side? Gluten free, sweet tasting. Great for kugel. They are about the same caloric value as regular pasta.
3. Shirataki noodles - Made from an Asian yam plant known as Devil's Tongue. Up side? under 20 calories a serving. 3 grams of soluble fiber. Cheap if ordered in bulk. Of course, there is a learning curve on how to prepare them, and I can't just buy them at the local grocery store.
I prefer shirataki noodles to anything else. They have zero flavor, kind of like tofu, so they take on the flavor of whatever you cook them with. My plans right now include stir fry, pho and a good, heavy pesto. It should be good, and good for me.
