I'm attempting a nostalgic glance backwards. I might claim to be the tail end of Gen X (born between 1965 and 1979), so what makes a so-called generation? What expectations and attachments did we have? 12 years ago I was in Junior College...
1995 / 1996
Music
(Pre iPod) Alternative Pop (Tail end of Nirvana post Kurt Cobain, Foo Fighters, Garbage, The Cranberries, Alanis, Green Day, Bjork, Suede, Blur, Madonna - in particular 'Take A Bow' was all the rage) Techno was in its infancy (handbag house WHAT?)
Movies
'True Lies', 'Evita', 'Independence Day' - Will Smith was hip, 'Toy Story', 'Batman Forever' - with a wacko Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy
TV
Friends - says it all
'Happening' Places
Taka Square (Very New), Holland V, Zouk, 24 hour Denny's, Bowling Alley on Kim Seng Road, Mooks! (Remember where that was?) , Pacific Plaza Tower Records (*sniff*), Somerset Bar in the Westin (*sniff*)
Hair
Girls wore theirs to frame their faces in a short, wispy, lightly permed style, guys were just venturing into short, spiky 'Armani' cuts, but most kept theirs floppy and long with the notorious 'undercut'. Mousse was in. Eeeek.
Clothes
Grunge. Guys couldn't go wrong in skateboarding gear. Girls wore empire-line minis. (ala Gwyneth Paltrow in 'Emma' 1996).
Dream Night Out
House party followed by Mambo Night at Zouk
Communication
Pagers
Leisure
'Stoning' (hee hee), Skateboards were being replaced by roller blades (never tried either), Bridge and Tai tee, Truth or Dare, 'Zhao'ing class
Cool Attitude
Anarchy and working class angst
The good old days?????
