I went to the bandhall yesterday because William told me the directors had posted the tryout scores. I looked, and well.....I made 3rd chair. Oh sure, I only had 25 ticks total (after comparing that to every other instrument, trumpets had the lowest starting score after percussion, which doesnt count because they are tested on stuff completely different than the other instruments) and my biggest competitor made 16 ticks more than I did, but I lost to two 8th graders. 8th graders! Mitchell Hobbs and Troy Jackson, who are probably going to be the best two trumpeters this band has ever seen, tied for first chair. All I can say is HOLY SH*T! When they reach high school they will blow everyone else away they're so good. But while I'm still here, I have to do my best to stay on the top. That's why, as God as my witness, I'm going to work harder than I have ever worked to be prepared when the school year rolls around. Even if they've already surpassed me on the thing I love to do most, I swear I still have to keep working at being the ABSOLUTE best I can possibly ever be. If I don't do good on my promise, I entirely deserve being denied what I've wanted since the start of high school: first chair. Please, I will need help to stay motivated and not forget.
