In a desperate attempt to avoid doing work (I have a Faulkner paper to write, and a Physics midterm next week), I figured I'd update my LJ.
Like everyone else in fandom, but no one that I can tell in real life, I've gotten into Merlin. I've found, after years of reading fanfiction (I probably started reading fanfiction around ten years ago now -- I started early), that for me, it's often not the episodes or the book that's necessarily what keeps me interested in the series or whatever, but the fanfiction. Merlin, for some reason or another, has this ability to inspire some amazing fanfiction in some really awesome authors, some of whom I've loved in other fandoms. There's really no need to rec her, but
astolat's recent fic,
The Crown of the Summer Court is an excellent example of why I enjoy reading in the Merlin fandom so much. Also, Merlin has the added bonus already messing with the premise of Merlin and Arthur's relationship, bringing from a mentor/student relationship to a friendship, so that messing with Arthurian lore (in ways which still fit with the characters) is acceptable, and can be done very well. Also, Merlin is able to hit one of my favorite fandom plots, which is that of reincarnation in a modern setting. It doesn't always succeed, but sometimes, it can be done very well. And the AUs in this fandom are amazing -- I point you toward
rageprufrock's
Drastically Redefining Protocol, in which Arthur is the Crown Prince of Britain and Merlin is a medical student and there's a Vanity Fair article at the end.
Also, if for some reason, you felt the need to read lots of Merlin fanfiction, I have my favorites linked
here, sorted by rating, pairing (spoiler alert, it's all Merlin/Arthur) and sometimes by genre, such as future fic and AU.
In real life, I'm a third year undergraduate at a state university, racking my brain desperately, trying to figure out whether I want to be a dentist or a doctor or an amoeba for a living. It's fun times.
How're you all?
